Handheld device dev platform targets Linux

A design services company in Chennai, India is developing a Linux-based reference design for portable devices based on Intel's PXA270 processor. E-con Systems's Sirius Handheld Reference Platform, expected early next year, will run Linux 2.6.16 and Trolltech graphics stacks, according to the company. (more…)

Linux net stack supports OCF crypto, multi-core MIPS64

6Wind has updated its embedded Linux networking stack for multi-service IP gateways of all sizes. 6WindGate v.2.8 features support for multi-core MIPS64 processors, support for standard-compliant IPsec crytography hardware, and an XML-based management API said to support integration with UTM (unified threat management) software. Motorola joins Eclipse.org with mobile Linux focus

Motorola has joined the Eclipse Foundation at the highest level, and will participate in the Device Software Development Platform (DSDP) project founded by Wind River. Motorola will also hold a seat on the Eclipse.org board, and participate in the organization's Architecture, Requirements, and Planning councils. (more…)

Tiny WAPs share files and printers

Half a dozen companies around the world are shipping tiny Linux-based wireless access points (WAPs) with built-in file and printer servers. The WAPs appear to run a 2.4-series Linux kernel on a RISC-based SoC (system-on-chip) that executes the i486 instruction set. (more…)

Graphics cards target multi-headed thin clients, support Linux

Matrox Graphics is shipping a family of graphics cards aimed at multi-headed thin clients and network computers. The EpicA series dual- and quad-display graphics cards are supported by binary-only Linux drivers, but source may be available to thin-client builders, according to the company. (more…)

Opera rev’s desktop browser

Open standards-based push email heads for Singapore

Consilient's portable, open standards-based push email software has been selected by Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) for use in a service that could bring push email to 1.2 million Asian subscribers. Consilient's “Push” products, which include a J2ME-based email client that could support Linux phones, will be used with SingTel's “MobileMail” service, due to launch in July, according to the company.
