Mobile TV chipset, stack support Linux

Thin Multimedia Inc. (TMI) will demonstrate its PAL-format MobileTV software stack for Linux on a digital TV receiver chipset from Siano, at the CTIA Wireless 2007 show next week in Orlando, Fla. Additionally, the company says it will collaborate with Siano on a “multi-standard, integrated mobile TV” product. (more…)

Mesh drivers target Linux device makers

Meshcom Technologies of Finland is readying a mesh networking driver aimed at Linux- and Windows-based device vendors. MeshDriver 1.0 will be commercially available to vendors wishing to build products that form self-healing mesh networks optimized for throughput and performance in fixed and mobile network environments, the company said. In an effort to cut costs and boost margins, Motorola will reportedly use its Linux/Java based mobile phone operating system across “all mid- and high-tier devices.” The beleaguered communications company will fall $1 billion short of analyst expectations this quarter, due to a slump in its mobile phone business. WLAN-on-a-chip targets Linux devices

NXP (formerly Philips semiconductor) will soon ship what it claims to be the “world's smallest” WLAN SoC (system-on-chip). The 5-mm-square BGM220 integrates RF, baseband/MAC, and ARM7-based processing functions, features “ultra low power consumption” optimized for handheld applications, and is supported with Linux drivers, according to the company. Linux, Opera help fight HIV AIDS in Malawi

Linux grabs 30% of China’s fast-growing smartphone market

China consumed 15 million smartphones in 2006, up from 10 million units in 2005, resulting in more than doubling of smartphone revenues, according to Chinese market research firm CCID Consulting Company. Symbian controlled 63.2 percent of the market, followed by Linux (30.3 percent) and Windows Mobile (5.4 percent). (more…)

Free Linux router distro gains sophisticated QoS
