Open HA middleware gains CGL pre-integration

OpenClovis has updated its dual-licensed “carrier-grade” middleware for high-availability (HA) telecom and enterprise systems. Enterprise dual-mode phone router runs Linux

Agito Networks has announced a Linux-powered communications router aimed at helping enterprises cut mobile phone usage fees. The RoamAnywhere Mobility Router works with dual-mode phones, routing calls over WiFi when available, and handing calls between WiFi and cellular networks as needed, the company claims. (more…)

What Mot’s UIQ buy says about Linux

Motorola has bought half of UI Holdings, owner of the UIQ Symbian software stack for touchscreen phones. The investment could help Motorola profit from an emergent touchscreen smartphone market, while focusing its Linux development efforts around higher-volume mass market phones such as the RAZR2 V8. Nokia unveils Linux-powered N810 Internet Tablet

Nokia has announced a new version of its Linux-based Internet tablet. The N810 is smaller, heavier, and faster than the older N800, with new features that include a slide-out hardware QWERTY thumb keyboard, GPS receiver, FM transmitter (for in-car listening), and a light-sensing screen dimmer. High-availability middleware supports “super-clusters”

Enea has enhanced its high-availability middleware product for the second time in two months. Element 2.3 adds support for “super-clusters,” explicit support for Wind River's Carrier Grade Linux, and claimed “industry-first” support for Tail-F Systems's ConfD, a scriptable XML-based system aimed at automating repetitive, failure-prone network management tasks. Application processors a vanishing species?

ABI Research is forecasting that standalone baseband processors are set to become a thing of the past in the wireless handset market. Instead, says the firm, they'll be replaced by SoCs (system-on-chip processors) that integrate a baseband processor with a “multimedia-rich” application processor. (more…)

Broadcom ships “3G phone on a chip”

Broadcom is continuing its push into the market for ARM-based mobile phone processors, with a newly shipping, sub-$25 “3G phone on a chip.” The BCM21551is built on 65nm technology and combines two ARM11 cores with HSPA (high-speed packet access) modem acceleration, multiple radios, 480Mbps USB, and on-die audio/video subsystems, according to the company. Intel, ARM collaborate on device security

ARM Ltd. and Intel are collaborating on a set of hardware and software technologies aimed at improving security in devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, and set-top boxes. The effort will integrate ARM's TrustZone hardware/software authentication with Intel's Authenticated Flash memory, targeting next-generation system-on-chip (SoC) designs, according to the companies. 128 million Linux phones forecast for 2012

By 2012, Linux will ship annually in 128 million mobile phones, or about 8.8 percent of all handsets sold, forecasts Informa in a new research report. The report also forecasts a bright outlook for other open source mobile technologies, including Java, WebKit, and others. (more…)

Carrier Grade Linux goes on international tour
