ETX module has Atom, SATA ports

Diamond Systems announced an ETX 3.0-compliant COM (computer on module) offering two SATA interfaces and an Intel Atom N270 CPU. The “ETX-N270” (left) accepts 2GB of RAM, has a 10/100 Ethernet port, offers CRT, LVDS, or TV video output, and runs Linux 2.6, the company says. (more…)

Mobile Flash to tap multi-touch, accelerometers

Adobe's “full desktop” Flash Player 10 for smartphones, including Linux-based Android and Palm Pre models, will offer support for multi-touch and accelerometer features, says an industry report. Flash Player 10 should be available in beta by the end of the year, says the story. (more…)

Virtual platform used to prep Cortex-A9 design

Semiconductor manufacturer NXP has deployed a development platform based on CoWare's Virtual Platform ESL technology, designed to port Linux to Cortex-A9 processor-based designs in advance of their physical availability. NXP's Virtual Prototyping Environment (VPE) integrates ARM's “Fast Models” for ARM Cortex, suggesting that NXP will soon join TI in announcing a Cortex-A9 SoC. (more…)

MID runs Maemo Linux on ARM

Amid signs that sales of Intel Atom-based MIDs are suffering, Optima announced a mobile Internet device that runs Maemo Linux on an ARM/XScale processor. The Optima OP5-E uses an 806MHz Marvell PXA320 processor, and offers a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen and a 3.2-megapixel camera. (more…)

Intel SSDs touted as faster

Intel has announced new SSDs (solid-state disks) it says are faster and cheaper than earlier versions. Intended for netbooks, notebooks, and embedded devices, the X25-M and X18-M move to a 34-nanometer (nm) manufacturing process and come in 80GB or 160GB capacities, the company says. (more…)

Vietnamese netbook offers bilingual Linux distro

Vietnamese Linux technology firm Hacao has released a netbook and a new bilingual (English/Vietnamese) release of its Hacao Linux 2009 CE distro. The Hacao Netbook is a rebranded version of MSI's Intel Atom-based Wind, featuring a 10-inch screen and 160GB of storage. (more…)

MEMS the word at ESC Boston

TechInsights says it has “expanded the scope” of the upcoming ESC (Embedded Systems Conference) Boston to include sensors, lighting/LEDs, MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems), and SIP (systems intellectual property). Open source Linux device drivers submitted by — Microsoft?

A software company based in Redmond, Wash. has released 20,000 lines of code under GPLv2 for three Linux device drivers, for potential contribution to the Linux kernel. Microsoft says its first open source Linux code contribution is designed to speed the performance of the operating system when it's run in a Hyper-V virtual machine. (more…)

Fujitsu is shipping a fanless, Linux-compatible thin client touted for its low power consumption. The Fujitsu Futro S100 is equipped with a 500MHz Via Eden ULV processor, offers a 512MB internal flash drive, and consumes less than 11 Watts under full load, claims Fujitsu. (more…)

Content-inspection coprocessors ship with Linux SDK

Cavium Networks is sampling four content-inspection coprocessors for network security devices. The Nitrox DPI CN17XX Layer 7 coprocessors provide 4Gpbs to 20Gbps of deterministic performance with low latency, support unlimited pattern rule-sets and flows, and ship with a Linux-ready hardware/software kit, says Cavium. Like NX, Google's open source NeatX server is designed to address X Windows' shortcomings when running over networks — and one analyst sees it as a cloud-ready, display-server complement to Google's Chrome OS.
