Seoul, Korea — (press release excerpt) — Mizi Research has a contract to supply its Embedded Linux operating system, Linuette, to CIIT for use as the operating system within a newly developed multimedia PDA.

The new PDA's application software includes PDA PIM (Personal Information Management) applications, Internet functions (web browsing, email, etc), and extensive multimedia capabilities (players for MPEG, MP3, etc.). A Korean-English dictionary and several games are also included with the device.

Internally, the device is based on an Intel 206 MHz StrongARM SA-1110 system-on-chip processor with 32MB of DRAM and 32MB of Flash storage memory. Input/output connections include USB, serial, and Ethernet ports, and there is a CompactFlash slot for additional expansion (memory or I/O). The display is a 240 x 320 pixel, 4096-color LCD.

The PDA's internal operating system platform is Mizi's Linuette Embedded Linux OS, which is based on the Linux kernel 2.4.5. The GUI and windowing environment is based on Trolltech's Qt/Embedded, and there is also an included Java Virtual Machine.

CIIT plans to begin selling the device by October 2001, according to CIIT's Vice President, Jo Joon. “Various PDAs based on Embedded Linux with powerful multimedia features will show on the domestic [Korean] market after the third quarter of this year,” said Joon.
