Broadcom dual-MIPS multiprocessor chip gains Linux support

San Jose, CA; Communications Design Conference — (press release excerpt) — MontaVista Software today announced Linux support for the SiByte BCM1250 processor, the first product in Broadcom's SiByte family of high performance, low power, and highly integrated processors. The BCM1250 is designed for use in both control plane and data plane applications across Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area… Network (MAN), and Wide Area Network (WAN) environments.

The BCM1250 is unique among embedded high-integration processors with its MIPS-based dual-CPU architecture. The device contains two MIPS64 CPU cores, each scalable from 600 MHz to 1 GHz, along with a 512KB L2 cache, dual-channel DDR memory controller, and high-speed I/O. Earlier this year the BCM1250 received In-Stat/MDR's Microprocessor Report 2001 Analysts' Choice Award in the Best High-Performance Embedded Processor category.

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 2.1 has been optimized for the Broadcom BCM91250A evaluation platform. The MontaVista Linux kernel fully supports BCM1250's Symmetric Multi Processing (SMP) operation, resulting in high throughput and swift, deterministic response to real-time events. MontaVista Linux for the BCM1250 supports a range of standard I/O interfaces and 11 cross development hosts, and provides all the significant features of MontaVista Linux Professional Edition, such as the Preemptible Kernel, Real-time Scheduler, Target Configuration Tool (TCT) and Library Optimizer Tool (LOT).
