SSV Embedded Systems has begun bundling an eCos starter kit with its gumstick-sized DIL/NetPC DNP/5280. The kit targets deeply embedded applications requiring networking, such as industrial control and data acquisition.

A uClinux starter kit, pictured above, has been available for some time.

According to SSV, eCos specialist eCosCentric collaborated on the “eCosPro Starter Kit,” which contains an “industrial-strength” release of the eCos real-time operating system, RedBoot firmware, eCos configuration tools, and GNU compilation tools.

SSV's DNP/5280 features a 32-bit MCF5280 66MHz ColdFire microcontroller by Motorola, with a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface, 8 MByte Flash, and 16 MByte SDRAM. Other interfaces include two serial ports, one parallel, SPI, I2C, and CAN-bus.

The DNP/5280 is based on a 64-pin Dual-In-Line (DIL) pinout compatible with the DIL/NetPC family.

eCos is an open source, royalty-free, real-time operating system designed for deeply embedded applications. The highly configurable nature of eCos allows the operating system to be customised to precise application requirements, delivering the best possible run-time performance and an optimised hardware resource footprint, according to eCosCentric.

RedBoot is a complete bootstrap and debug environment for embedded systems based on the eCos hardware abstraction layer. RedBoot allows download and execution of embedded applications via serial or ethernet, including embedded Linux and eCos applications. It can be used for both product development (debug support) and in deployed products (flash update and network booting), according to eCosCentric.
