Intel joins Eclipse to support open development tool framework

Intel announced that it has joined the Eclipse consortium, an organization of software development tool vendors working together to create an open platform for development tool integration. Intel said it plans to offer Eclipse plug-ins supporting its Pentium 4, Xeon, and Itanium processors, and Intel said it also plans to integrate its development tools, such as Intel Compilers and Intel VTune Performance… Analyzers, into the Eclipse development environment.

“Intel is pleased to participate as a member of Eclipse and will play an active role in fostering tool interoperability and integration within the Eclipse framework,” commented Jonathan Khazam, general manager of Intel's Software Products Division, who will represent Intel on the Eclipse Board of Stewards. “Our commitment to open standards and deep knowledge of processor architecture will help us enable software developers to harness the full power of Intel processors for applications,” he added.

Eclipse is an open platform for tool integration built by a community of tool providers interested in creating better development environments and fostering product integration. The Eclipse framework is said to provide tool vendors with a flexible plug-in architecture for easy integration that promotes interoperability between tools. Additionally, Eclipse provides developers with a rich, easy-to-use development environment that can be customized with the tools needed to meet their specific challenge, the Eclipse organization said.
