Linux CODEC set, reference board support new TI RISC/DSP chip

Ingenient Technologies has ported its CODEC set for embedded Linux to the Texas Instruments (TI) DM342, a programmable digital media processor that targets IP (Internet protocol) set-top boxes and digital media adapters. Ingenient also offers a DM342-based hardware reference design that supports Linux.

The CODEC set includes video, audio, image, networking, and telecommunications CODECs, protocols, and supporting software. Supported video compression formats include MPEG-4 ASP, MPEG-4 SP, MPEG-4 SSP, H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC), MPEG-2, MPEG-1, DivX(TM), WMV9, and MJPEG. Numerous audio and image compression formats are also supported, according to Ingenient.

The TI DM342 is optimized for streaming and portable multimedia applications. It incorporates a low-power C54x digital signal processor (DSP) core, an ARM926 RISC processor, plus video and imaging coprocessors to improve performance.

The MP4900- BRD-DM342-20 hardware reference design, currently available, supports embedded Linux or Ingenient's own optimized microkernel.

“Ingenient's software is able to achieve full D-1 resolution, 30 frames per second video encode and decode with our MPEG-4 Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile CODECs on this latest offering from TI for streaming media applications,” stated Ingenient CEO Sami Levi. “Stereo audio in MP3, AAC, and WMA formats is simultaneously encoded with the video for the highest quality recordings at a very low cost.”

“Ingenient has always been at the forefront of software development for its multimedia DSPs,” said Charlie Gonsalves, a business development manager at Texas Instruments.
