Linux in industry: Line printing system for industrial production

Dec 19, 1997 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Kobold Sistemi used uClinux, open source networking, thttpd, and FreeType to improve product functionaly and gain complete technological ownership of its industrial printing control system. Kobold produces a range of industrial inkjet printers, and currently claims to rank first among worldwide producers of systems for marking, measuring, checkweighting, and labeling.

Kobold realized its embedded uClinux implementation in 12 months, with the assistance of subcontractor Consorzio Roma Ricerche, which supplied training, system specifications, and design. Kobold's uClinux-based industrial print contol system can be controlled remotely through a TCP socket server, which can also be used to emulate remotely the local keyboard and display. It includes a dynamic Web server (thttpd) for bitmap previews.
