Linux net stack supports 32-processor ATCA board

Jan 17, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 9 views

6Wind has ported its Linux networking stack to a high-performance, ATCA-compliant telecommunications “service processor” board powered by 32 MIPS64 CPU cores. The 6WindGate stack for Lanbird's LBATCA-NS0216 board targets access control routers and base stations for mobile broadband wireless Internet technologies,… including WiMax, WiBro, and IMS, according to 6Wind.

Lanbird's LBATCA-NS0216 ATCA board is claimed to offer a high level of integration, unequalled performance, and an excellent performance/power ratio. It is based on a pair of Cavium CN3860 processors, each with 16 MIPS64 R2 cores clocked at 600MHz.

Additional LBATCA-NS0216 features include:

  • Memory:
    • DDRII-800 Registered ECC SDRAM
    • 128-bit DDRII upto 800MHz
    • Up to 16GB with 4 DIMM
  • PICMG 3.0 interface:
    • 2 x 10/100/1000 BASE-TX ports for base interface
  • PICMG 3.1 interface option:
    • 8 x 1000 BASE-BX ports for fabric interface
  • Front Panel Interfaces:
    • Media interface module:
      • 8 x 10/100/1000 BASE-TX ports
      • 6 x gigabit SFP GBIC ports
    • 1 x 10 BASE-TX management Ethernet port (RJ45)
    • 1 x console port (RJ45)
  • Rear Panel Interfaces:
    • Codec accelerator
    • 2 x 10 x 1Gbps Ethernet interfaces

6Wind's 6WindGate networking stack for the Lanbird board is said to offer scalable routing, IPsec, Layer 2, IP mobility, and QoS (quality-of-service) functions for multi-10Gbps applications. Touted features include multi-core management, crypto libraries, a Fast Path routing implementation, and “Linux scalability.”

6Wind added MIPS64 support to 6WindGate last June, with a v.2.8 release. The stack also supports MIPS64-based processors from Raza Microelectronics, the company says.

Availability

The Lanbird board and 6WindGate embedded Linux networking stack appear to be available now. Pricing was not disclosed.
