(company press release) Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced a new, cost-effective board product targeted at original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) addressing the ISP and thin server markets. The first in a new PCI-based product line, the SPARCengine Ultra AXe motherboard enables OEMs to rapidly “Build for the Dot-Com Age.”

The SPARCengine Ultra AXe board allows OEMs for service providers to create a fully integrated platform running on the 64-bit UltraSPARC processor. This new product line is designed to address the needs of applications that require full functionality on a single ATX form factor board. With a riser card, the Ultra AXe board fits into a 1u form factor (less than 1.75 inches in height) for thin servers. In addition, several of Sun's value-added integrator partners offer Ultra AXe board-based server appliances and custom configured servers running the Linux operating system.

“The Ultra AXe delivers more compute power per cubic inch, doubling the compute density compared to our traditional ATX products,” said Mel Friedman, president, Sun Microsystems' Microelectronics. “This is the first product on a roadmap of products addressing the demanding reliability needs of service providers.”

The SPARCengine Ultra AXe board provides a high-performance solution for cost-sensitive applications. It delivers the ideal, flexible foundation for integrators to build server appliances or custom configured servers addressing the needs of the evolving service provider market.

The SPARCengine Ultra AXe board allows for expandability while meeting 1u height restrictions. The SPARCengine Ultra AXe board leverages the chip-on-board technology feature of the UltraSPARC IIi processor that reduces costs over the traditional module approach. In addition, the SPARCengine Ultra AXe board has built-in support for graphics, stereo audio and networking.
