Brecis Communications announced first shipments of three new “multi-service processors” (MSPs) that are intended for use in wireless and wireline routers, access points, and security appliances. The new processors each include a MIPS CPU, multiple Ethernet MACs, and an assortment of other system interfaces, and are supported by a Brecis-provided Linux distribution as well as a VxWorks board support… package. Additionally, Brecis offers a reference design that includes hardware, schematics, and software for an 802.11 access point.

The MSP2100, the highest performing member of the family, includes a built-in IPSec engine along with “seamless 802.11a/b/g support”, the company said. The MSP2100 is described as the first processor of its kind to support hardware-based 128, 192 and 256 bit encryption compatible with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), a standard which the U.S. federal government is expected to be widely adopting AES for both wireless and wireline security.

The other newly introduced processors include the MSP2005, for Ethernet routers and firewalls, and the MSP2007, for 802.11a, b, and g wireless routers and access points.

The three new Brecis MSPs are available now, and are priced between $10 and $20 in volume. Brecis quick start kits for the MSP2005, 2007, and 2100 are also available with support for Linux, VxWorks, and custom operating systems.
