Next generation WinCE to be called “Windows CE .NET”

Our friends at Microsoft sent along this note regarding the renaming of Windows CE and other related news . . .

Today at the Professional Developers Conference 2001 in Los Angeles, Microsoft announced that the next version of the Windows CE operating system, formerly code-named “Talisker,” will be officially called Windows CE .NET. Windows CE .NET will be the first embedded OS to support the .NET Compact Framework, delivering the technology preview of the .NET Compact Framework when it ships by the end of 2001. The .NET Compact Framework was also announced today at the PDC, and will allow OEMs to garner the support of the broad group of developers already familiar with Visual Studio .NET, and represents the basis for developing applications and Web services for smart devices based on Windows CE .NET.
