Real-time Linux used to build, test fighter jet engine

Feb 9, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

According to an article in the EE Times, defense contractor and jet fighter plane developer Pratt & Whitney is using real-time Linux to test a new “F135” engine slated to debut in the F-35 “Joint Strike Fighter” aircraft.

Two years in development, the engine was first tested at “full afterburner” level last week, according to the article. RTLinuxPro from FSMLabs “served in the development and testing of software for the engine's full-authority digital electronic control, as well as handling 'facility control' of test stands at the company's West Palm Beach, Fla., engine plant,” according to the article.

Find out more about the project, which the EE Times calls a victory for real-time Linux, by reading the full story.
