Tiny Linux system boosted to 400MHz

Oct 23, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 4 views

Gumstix has juiced up the tiny Linux PC based on its gumstick-sized SBCs (single-board computers). The newly shipping 400xm-cf model boasts a 400MHz PXA255 processor, and comes preinstalled with Linux 2.6.17.

The new 400xm-cf is the second in Gumstix's line of Netstix PCs, launched last month, which target distributed network monitoring and testing, as well as webserving, printer serving, IP-telephony, and security appliances. Like the original 200xm-cf, based on a 200MHz PXA255 processor, the 400xm-cf measures 4 x 1.3 inches (103 x 35mm), and displaces 68cc. Additional features include 64MB of RAM, 16MB of flash expandable via a Type II CompactFlash slot, and 10/100 Ethernet. A 5-Volt wallwart-style power supply is also included.

What's the point? CTO Craig Hughes stated, “A network administrator could effectively test the 'last mile' by putting one of these devices at each point-of-presence or tower, and [at] the demarcation point, [and then running tests] to determine and isolate performance issues along the network.”

CEO W. Gordon Kruberg stated, “The Netstix computers provide a low cost, reliable Linux platform on which [to] implement leading and proven software.”

Availability

The 400xm-cf is available now, priced at $186 in quantities of 1,000 or more, according to the company. It is also available pre-flashed with customer code.
