Book explains Linux app development with GNOME 2

High Definition Audio spec goes gold

Intel announced the version 1.0 release of its High Definition Audio (HD Audio) spec today. Intel expects HD Audio to replace the 10-year-old AC'97 spec, and says HD Audio will “[usher] in a new era of sound quality on mainstream and performance PCs, paving the way for broad adoption of next-generation audio.” HD Audio is designed to implement a broader range of audio, modem, and communications… (more…)

Linux, open hardware standards define telecom’s future

M2M phone growth to quadruple that of mobile handsets

Though the market for cellular handsets is predicted to grow 10 percent annually through the end of the decade, a rapidly growing market, cellular radios for Machine-to-Machine (“M2M”) applications, will see growth of 40 percent annually through 2010 according to the preliminary results of a report to be published by ABI Research next month. Real-time Linux gains VME control library

FSMLabs has added a VME control library to its hard real-time operating system, RTLinuxPro. The library offers a POSIX API with hard real-time performance for VME device drivers, and for multiple VME processor cards. It targets heavy duty control and simulation applications. (more…)

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil start-up Ponto-i has developed a modern, Linux based jukebox with a retro look reminiscent of the 50s. The “Digipop” jukebox runs a custom Linux distribution based on Debian, along with LinuxBIOS, and uses a mix of custom and commodity PC hardware. (more…)

LynuxWorks blasts GHS ‘FUD’

RTOS and embedded Linux vendor LynuxWorks has responded to last week's statement from Green Hills Software that lambasted embedded Linux as inappropriate for use in high security defense and military applications. The LynuxWorks response refutes GHS claims that open systems such as Linux are inherently ineligible for EAL-7 certification. (more…)

IBM sells 400 series embedded PowerPC technology to AMCC

Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) and IBM announced today that AMCC is acquiring intellectual property and other assets associated with IBM's 400 series of embedded PowerPC standard processors, along with a license to IBM's “Power Architecture.” The agreement will transfer the PowerPC 403, 405, and 440 processors to AMCC, sources say. CELF Linux source tree gains new mobile phone, telematics chips

Lineo Solutions has contributed two more embedded Linux kernel ports to the CE Linux Forum (CELF) source tree. The ports support mobile phone and automotive telematics chips from Hitachi spinoff Renesas. They include power management, real-time, and other performance optimizations for consumer electronic devices. (more…)

Intel unveils next-gen XScale processors

Intel took the wraps off its next generation XScale mobile processors today, at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Taiwan. Intel says that its new PXA27x processors (formerly code-named “Bulverde”) incorporate several new technologies aimed at the multimedia, low power, and security requirements of advanced cell phones and wireless PDAs. Residential gateway reference design includes uClinux

Micrel Semiconductor and Arcturus Networks have released a hardware and software reference design for residential gateways. The design includes ARM-based network processors from Micrel and residential gateway (RG) software from Arcturus.
