New book explains embedded systems

Elsevier has just published Embedded Systems Architecture, by Tammy Noergaard. The 656-page book provides a broad and in-depth overview of embedded systems architecture, and is suitable for undergraduate embedded systems courses in electronics/electrical engineering and engineering technology, and for corporate training, according to the publisher. Tiny XScale SBC gains expansion bus

Two new miniature computers from Gumstix Inc. enhance the company's Linux-based family of single-board computers (SBCs) with expanded memory and communications capabilities. The new models add a 92-pin expansion-bus connector to the gumstick-sized 80 x 20 x 6.3 mm Connex family, enabling memory and I/O expansion. (more…)

OSDL releases version 3.0 Carrier Grade Linux spec

Fanless PC/104 SBCs feature Gigabit Ethernet, Linux support

Parvus will soon release two PC/104-Plus CPU modules based on Intel's 400 MHz ULV (ultra low voltage) Celeron processor. The SpacePC 1451 and 1453 will target applications with high data transfer bandwidth requirements, and will support “generic” Linux. (more…)

PowerPC 440GX gains BlueCat Linux BSP

LynuxWorks has added a BSP supporting AMCC's PowerPC 440GX embedded processor to its BlueCat Linux 5.1 embedded Linux distribution based on the 2.6 Linux kernel. Reference platforms target Linux-based VoIP devices

IBM, Sony, Toshiba detail Cell processor architecture

IBM, Sony, and Toshiba disclosed the architectural design of a jointly developed, multi-core “Cell” processor claimed to feature supercomputer-like floating-point performance and clock speeds in excess of 4 GHz, at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) today. Embedded Linux dev-kit includes tiny PXA255 platform

Viosoft is shipping a Linux-based hardware/software development kit intended to help developers create Internet-enabled devices or add Internet access to existing equipment. The kit bundles the company's Arriba Embedded Linux Edition development/debug tools and software with Intrinsyc's tiny PXA255-based CerfCube (pictured), and includes embedded Linux preinstalled. MontaVista aims embedded Linux ecosystem at mobile phones
