“Cell phone camera” market to overtake standalone cameras

Mar 20, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Market researcher Future Image Inc. announced today that it expects “cell phone cameras” to outsell digital and film cameras combined in 2003. The projection came from the results of a recently completed Future Image survey, titled The Camera-phone Phenomenon — A “New Deal” in Imaging.

The study focused primarily on the Asia Pacific region, but also included prospects for the U.S. and Europe, as well as overall impact on the imaging industry. The survey covered both camera-phones and camera attachments to cell phones.

“The camera-phone is about to evolve from an Asian phenomenon whose scale warrants global attention, into a global phenomenon,” commented Future Image president Alexis Gerard. “In less than four years from their first commercial introduction, these devices will have become the world's most widely used picture-taking appliances.”
