Beaverton, OR — (press release excerpt) — Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) today announced that telecommunications industry leader Ericsson has been added to its roster of members aligned to guide Linux development for the telecommunications market segment. Ericsson will participate in the OSDL Carrier Grade Linux Working Group established earlier this year. Together, OSDL industry leaders and open source community members are developing feature roadmaps to enable Linux for the telecommunications and enterprise market segments.

“We are thrilled to add Ericsson to our growing line-up of telecommunications industry leaders who are actively guiding the development of Carrier Grade Linux,” said Tim Witham, OSDL lab director. “OSDL is a catalyst for guiding the evolution of Linux and the development of an open Carrier Grade Linux operating system that meets the requirements of the telecommunications industry.”

Ericsson joins other industry leaders in the Carrier Grade Linux Working Group, including Alcatel, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard Company, IBM, Intel, MontaVista Software, Nokia, Red Hat and SuSE. The working group, in conjunction with the open source community, is working on collecting requirements and specifying the architecture of the Carrier Grade Linux platform. The working group also encourages the development of commercial and open standard components on top of Linux to implement the required functionality of the platform. The main working areas include service availability, architecture, validation and requirements.
