Microwindows project leader ‘drops the other shoe’

Greg Haerr, creator of the open source Microwindows embedded Linux GUI and president of Century Software, and Chief Strategist of GUI Technologies for Hard Hat Linux developer MontaVista Software, today jointly announced an open source browser for Linux-based Internet appliances and embedded systems. The project has been a joint effort of Century Software and MontaVista. Called ViewML, the new embeddable browser currently occupies a mere 2.1 megabyte of system memory, and requires just 760 kilobytes of disk (or Flash) storage. Taken together with the Microwindows embedded Linux GUI, the two projects represent a complete open source graphics and browser solution for embedded Linux based applications such as hand-held computers, navigation systems, smart phones, set-top boxes, and specialized embedded systems.

According to Haerr, the ViewML Project has been developed based on publicly-available open source code, with contributions from the embedded Linux community. The ViewML Browser Project's first release implements HTML 3.2 display capabilities, along with a user interface and a basic JavaScript interpreter. ViewML runs on both the standard X Window System as well as the Microwindows embedded windowing system.
