PalmPalm goes OMAP with TI deal

Mar 21, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

PalmPalm Technology Inc. reports that they have recently signed a mutual agreement with Texas Instruments (TI) to provide a mobile Linux solution for TI's OMAP platform, which supports 2.5G or 3G based communications on next generation PDAs. PalmPalm's OMAP support will be based on the company's Tynux embedded… Linux operating system.

Introduced late last year, TI's OMAP platform for wireless processing delivers voice and multimedia enhanced applications for wireless phones, PDAs, and advanced mobile Internet appliances. OMAP integrates both GSM and GPRS mode communication module with a PDA module. TI's OMAP performs multiple processes on a single chip, thereby reducing manufacturing costs, extending battery life by reducing power consumption, and delivering smaller footprint phones.

OMAP is an alternative to Intel's XScale architecture. TI intends to integrate a communications module and PDA processor with OMAP's robust multimedia capabilities as the major processor for next generation PDAs and smartphones.
