PowerPC 750FX PrPMC module gains Linux and Linux SMP support

Albuquerque, NM — (press release excerpt) — SBS Technologies announced Linux support for the Palomar 1000 line of advanced ProcessorPMC (PrPMC) computer modules. The Palomar 1000 DFX, which features two IBM PowerPC 750FX processors, uses the Linux multiprocessing software to load balance the two processors while using a single operating system image, common memory and disk I/O resources. The Palomar 1000 DFX with Linux SMP is ideal for any processor intensive application, such as high-capacity switches, routers or advanced analytical computing.

The SBS Palomar 1000 line was introduced to meet the growing demand for PrPMCs as a modular approach to managing CPU horsepower, allowing system designers to add functionality incrementally without replacing expensive legacy equipment. Using Palomar DFX with Linux SMP, designers can now exponentially increase the raw processing performance of their systems while using fewer slots and effectively reducing the overall system cost per rack.

The Palomar 1000 line closely follows the IBM 750FX PowerPC processor family roadmap, with both the SFX and DFX versions of the board featuring the 750FX running at 667+ MHz. Two 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports, as well as two serial ports, provide high-speed data throughput and are available via front or rear I/O options. A custom engineered heatsink and thermal interface design enhance heat dissipation on the Palomar boards. The dual DFX version uses under 15W of power, and the SFX uses under 10.
