Touch Dynamics Announces KOSIX — a Linux based Kiosk OS

Everett, WA — (company press release) — Touch Dynamics today announced the development of an open-source software project to develop an industry standard public kiosk terminal operating system. The purpose of the Kiosk Operating System (KOSIX) project is to create an operating system platform for public terminals that is stable, secure, powerful and open to everyone. The KOSIX project is intended to offer a viable alternative to conventional kiosk operating systems

In following the Open Source tradition, KOSIX is based upon the GNU General Public License, which allows the greatest amount of freedom for all who choose to adopt it. KOSIX will continue to evolve in a fashion similar to other Open Source projects, with features and functionality being dictated directly by the developers who seek to use it. Like other Open Source projects, KOSIX is not owned or controlled by any single person or entity, and will remain free for all to benefit, both private and commercially, so long as the beneficiaries respect and uphold the spirit of the license it is bound by.

The KOSIX OS will be an incredible tool in the upcoming information age. By providing a powerful front end to existing, as well as yet undefined data warehouses, the KOSIX OS will allow people from any and all genres of life to be connected to virtually any public data available. All this will be available at the touch of a screen. It also brags of an unprecedented feature set as well. The KOSIX OS will have a simple GUI designed around the Xfree86 standard. The KOSIX OS will be networkable, providing remote administration and maintainability. Both a simple and more complex version of the Operating Manual of the KOSIX OS will be provided with the product, to provide installation, configuration and upkeep. The KOSIX architecture will add a modular design to the already open source Linux kernel, resulting in a highly configurable OS. There are also plans to provide a set of development tools for those developers who would like to adjust the KOSIX OS without delving into the mysterious realm of the Linux kernel.

The first version of the KOSIX OS will contain a majority of features defined by the kiosk community at large. TouchDynamics will provide a suite of tools that will allow the kiosk community to configure KOSIX OS according to their needs. Support groups, the Touch Dynamics web site, general Linux and Open Source, and others will be available and will expedite the release of the KOSIX OS.
