X window Embedded Linux squeezes onto a single floppy

Mungkie Associates has released version 1.2.3 of its single-floppy, open source, GUI-enabled, net-centric embedded Linux distribution, which ranks 62nd overall among the most popular Freshmeat projects, and is Freshmeat's #1 embedded project.

Mungkie initially created the embedded Linux distribution as a means to demonstrate the company's ability to squeeze a rich GUI environment into resource-constrained embedded devices. But judging by the project's high popularity, it seems to have become much more than just a cool demo.

An earlier, now-deprecated release booted from two floppy disks. The latest release boots from a single 1.44MB floppy disk, and, according to Mungkie, contains:

  • Full featured graphical web browser with ssl support
  • File manager
  • Rdesktop remote client
  • vncviewer vnc client
  • ssh client
  • X scripting system
  • Text editor
  • Desktop system
  • X terminal emulator
  • Gnome/KDE compliant wm
  • many other linux utilities…

Mungkie says the distribution will run on any x86-based system with 5MB of memory, a floppy drive, VESA compliant graphics card, and a math coprocessor. Mungkie can build floppies that support systems without math coprocessors and other system configurations, from source.

Details and downloads are available from the project's webpage at Freshmeat.net.
