Free embedded Linux presentations, training materials

An embedded Linux training and services company in the South of France has published 500 pages of embedded Linux training materials and presentations under an open source license. Linux PDA project for Mac OS X achieves release

A project to create a Linux-based PDA software environment that integrates closely with MacOS X has achieved a new development release. The myPDA-Zaurus-Edition project test release includes libraries, a runtime component, PDA applications, and cross-compiling toolchain. (more…)

IBM claims Linux-based BlueGene/L now world’s most powerful supercomputer

IBM announced this week that a Linux-based BlueGene/L supercomputer has surpassed NEC's Earth Simulator in Japan to become the world's most powerful supercomputer. Using the industry-standard LINPACK benchmark, IBM's BlueGene/L system attained a sustained performance of 36.01 Teraflops, eclipsing the three year old top mark of 35.86… (more…)

Freescale debuts PowerQUICC III quartet

Freescale has announced four new PowerPC SoCs (system-on-chips) expected to sample in Q2, 2005. Each will use 90nm process technology said to decrease power consumption at higher clock rates. The four new PowerQUICC III chips will target enterprise networking, telecom transmission and switching, 3G wireless infrastructure, storage, and high-end imaging. (more…)

Freescale reveals plans for dual-core PowerPC

Freescale Semiconductor has outlined plans for a dual-core, low-power PowerPC-based SoC (system-on-chip), but has not yet committed to sample or ship dates. The MPC8641D will be built using 90nm SOI (silicon-on-insulator) technology, and will feature dual e600 PowerPC cores. It will target networking, telecom, military, storage, and pervasive computing applications. (more…)

DSL is most popular broadband tech, DSL Forum says

Global DSL (digital subscriber line) customers increased almost 40 percent in the last twelve months, making DSL the most popular broadband technology worldwide, according to the DSL Forum, an industry consortium of DSL service and equipment providers. Report: ZigBee — the next revolution in wireless technology

ABI Research has released a report calling the ZigBee market a “sleeping giant,” and forecasting the deployment of 80 million ZigBee devices by the end of 2006. ZigBee is billed as a low-cost, low-power, low-data-rate wireless networking standard designed for monitoring and control applications in both industrial and home markets. (more…)

Rugged outdoor PDA/GPS runs embedded Linux

A company called “Node” has come out with a rugged handheld computer and GPS unit intended for location-aware interactive exploration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The Explorer v2 is based on a 400MHz XScale processor, and reportedly supports both embedded Linux and Microsoft Pocket PC. (more…)

Zaurus users gain commercial word processor

SoftMaker is offering a free download of a beta version of its commercial word processing software for the Sharp Zaurus. The company calls its TextMaker application “the most comprehensive word processor ever developed” for the Linux-based Zaurus PDAs. (more…)

Personal security device runs eCos
