Multi-threaded processor goes dual-core

Raza Microelectronics, Inc. (RMI) is shipping a new low-end XLS MIPS64-based processor called the XLS208 that offers dual 1GHz cores and comes with a Linux-compatible evaluation board and software development kit (SDK). RMI also announced that Macraigor's hardware debugging tools will support both the XLR and XLS processor lines. (more…)

Embedded Linux research report ships

Evans Data Corp. (EDC) has published the full result set from its annual survey of embedded systems developers. Priced at about $20,000, and entitled “Embedded Systems Development Survey 2007,” the 180-page report addresses topics including embedded Linux platforms, working with multicore processors, and mobile development. Via tiptoes toward openness

Board and chipmaker Via is gearing up toward releasing Linux driver source code and product documentation for its popular x86-compatible chipsets and peripherals. The company has launched a website where Ubuntu 8.04 and SUSE 10 binary graphics drivers can be downloaded, with source code and documentation to follow, it says. (more…)

Atom-based COM Express module is “smallest possible”

RadiSys has announced an Atom-based computer-on-module (COM) that runs Linux and targets battery-powered handheld devices. The 3.4 x 2.75 inch Procelerant Z500 is as small as a COM can get while still complying with the COM Express standard's pinout, claims RadiSys. (more…)

Tilera introduced a Linux-based development kit for its scalable, 64-core Tile64 SoC (system-on-chip). The company also announced a dual 10GbE PCIExpress card based on the chip (pictured at left), revealed a networking customer win with Napatech, and demo'd the Tile64 running real-time 1080P HD video. Compact network appliance sports six gigE ports

Portwell has announced a “desktop” network security appliance that measures 9 x 8 x 2 inches and includes six Ethernet ports. The NAD-2100 comes with Celeron M or Pentium M processors, offers Compact Flash or DOM (disk-on-module) storage, and supports a serial-interfaced system console, says Portwell. (more…)

Linux CGL distro ported to multicore MIPS64 chips

Wind River has ported its newest Carrier Grade Linux distribution to multicore MIPS64-based processors from Raza Microelectronics, Inc. (RMI). Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition (PNE-LE) 2.0 for RMI's XLR chip line brings features like dual IPv4/IPv6 support and modern crytography to enterprise and telecom customers alike, Wind River said. Linux-based NAS devices move up to 6TB

Blurring the line between SOHO and enterprise network-attached storage (NAS), Netgear has announced three appliances that each provide six drive bays in a small-format box. VoIP beta supports Java-enabled phones
