The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) has adopted a protocol that could support transfer rates of 100Mbit/s, or 25 times greater throughput than current infrared communications protocols. “IRSimple” offers improved data throughput on current IrDA hardware (with a software upgrade), and so far, has been demonstrated at 16Mbit/s on prototypical hardware, the IrDA says. Skype has opened up several APIs behind its popular peer-to-peer VoIP and instant-message (IM) software, in hopes of increasingly interoperability with other IM networks.
