Is Apple muscle squashing Intel’s Ultrabook format?

Intel's “Ultrabook” format for portable computers is faltering, with pioneering vendor Asus failing to meet desired price points, and others choosing to wait it out, according to Taiwanese sources. DigiTimes reports claim that selling the devices for under $1,000 will be “practically infeasible.”

Rugged in-vehicle PC features Wi-Fi, touchscreen

Portwell announced an all-in-one, Wi-Fi-enabled touchscreen computer for in-vehicle fleet applications. The PARD-S071TW is equipped with an aluminum, IP65-protected front panel, a resistive touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, and a 1GHz Celeron M ULV processor, says the company.

Dell’s Honeycomb tablet launches in China

Dell launched its long awaited 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet — but only in China, with no date yet given for a U.S. appearance. The Dell Streak 10 Pro runs Android 3.1, offers the usual Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and other Honeycomb features, measures 0.51 inches (12.95mm) thick, and weighs 1.6 pounds, says the company.

Android hits 46 percent global smartphone share, says study

Android represented a whopping 46.4 percent of global smartphone shipments in Q2 2011, with 34 percent of Android's total coming from Samsung, putting it a close second behind Apple, says ABI Research. The research firm also released a teardown analysis of the HTC Sensation and its highly integrated smartphone processor — the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260.

Server uses PICMG SBC, delivers twelve expansion slots

Kontron added to its range of rackmount Kontron Industrial Silent Server (KISS) devices with a model offering a PICMG 1.3 backplane and system host board. The KISS 4U PCI761 supports Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processors running at up to 3.06GHz, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, five external drive bays and one internal bay, and up to 12 expansion slots, according to the company.

Nielsen reports more Android phone growth, but are returns a growing problem?

Nielsen released its U.S. smartphone subscriber numbers for June, showing Android inching up to 39 percent share ahead of Apple's iPhone with 28 percent. Meanwhile, some Android smartphone devices are being returned at a rate of 30 to 40 percent, claims an industry report.

Fanless PC taps new Atom N455-based Mini-ITX board

Ibase announced a fanless industrial PC with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 processor. Based on a recently announced MI890 Mini-ITX board, the CMI300-890 computer supports up to 2GB DDR3 RAM, offers a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) bay, and sports I/O including includes six USB ports, says the company.

Asus spins three low-priced netbooks

Asus is taking the netbook back to its roots, with two devices intended to sell for as little as $200. The low-cost EeePC R011PX and EeePC X101 come with the Ubuntu and MeeGo operating systems, respectively — but will also run Windows if you insist.

Informa, Retrevo studies add to mixed signals on Android tablet sales

Informa projects that Android tablets will rival Apple's iPad by 2015 and surpass them in 2016, and a survey by online store Retrevo shows high consumer interest in Amazon.com's rumored Android tablets. Yet, Google's own statistics appear to reveal slow Android tablet sales to date.

The XPedite7332 is equipped with a DVI port and dual gigabit Ethernet ports, as well as USB, serial, SATA, and PCI Express connections, and also features extended temperature and ruggedization support, the company says.

The DSA-132 features a removable CPU board, an available infrared touchscreen, a PCI Express x4 expansion slot, up to 2GB of DDR3 RAM, two speakers, and room for a SATA hard disk drive, the company says.

Embedded database gains replication and distributed transactions

ITTIA has updated its lightweight, Linux-compatible SQL R-DBMS (relational database management system) with High Availability (HA) and replication features aimed at embedded applications. ITTIA DB SQL 4.1 has added support for two-phase commit, synchronous replication on commit, table snapshots, and distributed transactions, says the company.

Verizon’s 4G version of Galaxy Tab 10.1 on sale July 28

Verizon Wireless will begin shipping the first 4G version of the Android 3.1-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 July 28. Meanwhile, Samsung says its Galaxy S II phone has now sold five million units in 85 days, and a slider version heading for AT&T has peeked out.
