Five Archos Android tablets range from 2.8 to 10.1 inches

Archos announced five new Android-based tablets running Android 2.2 on 800MHz to 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processors, all offering 720p HD video playback and 802.11n Wi-Fi. Shipping this fall, the tablets include the 2.8-inch Archos 28, the 3.2-inch Archos 32, the 4.3-inch Archos 43, the seven-inch Archos 70, and the 10.1-inch Archos 101, says the company.

Capacitive screens work with styluses, too

Hitachi Displays Ltd. has reportedly developed a projected capacitive touchscreen that responds either to fingers, a stylus, or gloved hands. To be shown at an October trade show in Japan, the device can respond to insulating materials including leather, wool, and artificial fibers, according to a Nikkei Electronics article.

Navigation display SoC gains Linux development support

Lineo Solutions and Timesys have collaborated on a new LinuxLink subscription supporting the 500MHz Renesas SH7724 SoC (system on chip). The Timesys LinuxLink subscription supports Renesas' SH7724-based MS774 development board and offers a Linux 2.6.33 kernel, drivers for touchscreens and other peripherals, plus the usual LinuxLink tools and services.

Android tablets tipped from Toshiba, Samsung, and KT

Toshiba is prepping a “Folio 100” tablet that will run Android 2.2 on an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and offer a 10.1-inch, WSVGA display, says a report. Meanwhile, the Tegra 2 scored strongly in benchmarks, the Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tab is tipped for a Thursday release, and Korea's KT announced an “Identity Tab” Android tablet, say reports.

Wind River launches Linux developer community

Wind River has launched a new community site for Wind River Linux customers, engineers, and embedded Linux community experts. The Wind River Developer Community for Linux is designed as a collaborative site where Wind River Linux users can ask and answer questions using a point rewards system, the company says.

Panel PCs work outdoors up to 140 deg. F

Advantech announced two fanless panel PCs whose front panels are said to withstand outdoor use. The 12.1-inch TPC-1251H and 5.7-inch TPC-651H include 1.33GHz Intel Atom processors, up to 2GB of RAM, dual isolated serial ports, and CompactFlash storage.

China’s popular Ming phones get Android makeover

Motorola announced three Android versions of its popular “Ming” family of flip-phones, again aimed at the Chinese market. The new low- to mid-range Ming line-up includes the Android 2.1-based XT806 for China Telecom's CDMA-2000 network, the Android 1.6-based A1680 for China Unicom's WCDMA, and the MT810 for China Mobile's TD-SCDMA, running the Android-based OPhone.

Intel grabs Infineon’s wireless business

After months of rumors and speculation, Intel is buying Infineon Technologies' wireless solutions (WLS) unit, its latest move to expand beyond its traditional server and PC processor business. Customers for Infineon's wireless chip business currently include Apple, Nokia, and Samsung.

Android, Nokia N900 receive Firefox mobile alpha

Mozilla has released the first alpha version of its Firefox Mobile (“Fennec”) browser for Android and the Nokia N900 smartphone. The Fennec alpha provides Firefox sync with Mozilla's desktop browser, and adds a new Electrolysis feature, allowing the browser interface to run in a separate process from the one rendering Web content, says Mozilla.

Customizable Linux tablet features 10.1-inch multitouch display

Japanese reseller Redstar has begun taking pre-orders for an ARM11-based 10.1-inch tablet computer from RealEase that runs the new Shogo Linux distro. The Shogo Tablet runs on a 533MHz Freescale i.MX37 system-on-chip (SoC) with 256MB RAM and 4GB flash, and offers a 1024 × 600 capacitive display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, plus 3G and Zigbee options, says RealEase.

The Linux Mint team has released the final version of Linux Mint 9 (“Isadora”), based on Ubuntu 10.04. Linux Mint 9 features a new software manager with 30,000 packages, a new backup tool, and menu and interface improvements, says the team.

AMD-powered signage PC can support four independent displays

Avalue announced a fanless computer aimed at gaming and digital signage applications. It's said the BMX-T50A supports a variety of AMD CPUs, accepts up to 4GB of RAM and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive, has a PCI Express x16 slot, and — with an optional graphics card — can drive up to four independent displays.

Hybrid solution crams flash storage into DIMM slots

Viking Modular announced an unusual way of adding SSD (solid state disk) storage to an embedded device or server. The company's SATADIMM is claimed to pack from 25GB to 400GB of flash storage into an unused, 240-pin DIMM socket.

Intel lowers forecasts amidst weakening consumer demand

After two extremely strong financial quarters, Intel says it is reducing revenue estimates for the third quarter of its 2010 financial year. Attributed to a softening in the consumer PC market, the forecast comes as the latest blow to an increasingly shaky economy.

Next-gen ARM cores break memory barrier, add hypervisor support

ARM Holdings has provided new details about its next-generation Cortex-A series processor core, currently code-named “Eagle.” In a presentation at this week's “Hot Chips” conference, the company described relevant extensions to its ARMv7-A architecture, including hypervisor extensions and the ability to address more than 4GB of RAM.
