Networked home electronics market set to take off

The market for home networking and connected entertainment devices will grow from $14 billion in 2005 to more than $85 billion in 2011, ABI forecasts. This “astonishing” growth rate will be driven by a desire for “pervasive connectivity” in applications such as multi-room PVRs, place-shifting, and networked gaming, according to the market research firm. Low-cost computer module runs embedded Linux

Ampro Computers will soon ship a low-cost, “computer-on-module” (COM) product that targets “commercial grade” embedded applications. The component-like XTX 800 integrates Intel “Dothan” procesors along with graphics, networking, and other I/O functions, and supports embedded Linux, according to the company. (more…)

TI chip merges Bluetooth and FM radio

Texas Instruments (TI) has crammed a Bluetooth wireless transceiver plus an FM stereo receiver into a system-on-chip (SoC) that can stream FM radio programming directly from a handheld device to a Bluetooth-enabled headset. The BlueLink 6.0 SoC is supported by software that targets Linux handhelds, according to the company. (more…)

Palm Linux phone rumor redux

Rumors that Palm Inc., may be developing a Linux-based mobile phone have resurfaced, fueled by a Palm job listing for a “Linux Engineer — Mobile Handset, Embedded Systems,” responsible for the “design and development of components of a new software platform.” (more…)

NAND flash gaining on NOR

The flash memory market grew substantially in 2005, driven by demand from consumer and communications applications, according to IC Insights. Interestingly, the NOR and NAND segments headed in opposite directions, with NOR sales declining 13 percent to $8.0 billion, while the NAND segment grew 64 percent to $10.6 billion, the research firm says. HA middleware vendor rolls rev, tips beta

Middleware developer GoAhead on Wednesday announced the beta of a new version of its high availability (HA) software platform, which runs on top of various Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) implementations. OSDL offers financial support to open source projects

The OSDL (Open Source Development Labs) has created a fund to support selected open source projects. The OSDL Fellowship Fund will assist community projects “that don't otherwise have access to financial resources or support,” the group announced Wednesday. (more…)

AMD64 gains real-time BSD SMP

FSMLabs announced Wednesday that it is shipping SMP (symmetric multi-processing) support for AMD's 64-bit Dual-Core Opteron processors running a real-time extension to BSD Unix. The company announced similar Linux support last summer, and says it has already supplied the BSD version of RTCore to network equipment… (more…)
