Linux powers 96-node “personal cluster”

[Updated 1:00PM PDT] — Orion Multisystems is shipping a Linux-based “personal cluster” based on 96 Transmeta processors in a case little larger than a normal PC. eCos I2C bus implementation code goes free

eCosCentric has donated a generic I2C bus implementation to the open source eCos operating system for deeply embedded systems. The bus implementation provides an API said to simplify the use of real-time clocks, serial EEPROMS, smart-cards, infrared controllers, and other devices attached to I2C connections. (more…)

Compact industrial computer supports Linux

Kontron has introduced a small, Pentium-based industrial computer targeting field buses, processor control, firewalls, human-machine interfaces, and embedded applications. The JRex IBOX measures 8.9 x 2.3 x 4.8 inches, and supports embedded Linux, according to the company. (more…)

Sysgo targets Linux support for all Kontron embedded computers

Sysgo says it plans to support “all relevant modules” from Kontron, and has added support for two of Kontron's embedded computer modules to its embedded Linux distribution. ELinOS 3.1 now supports the DIMM-PC/lite, based on STPC-Elite processors, and the Celeron-based ETX-P3T modules. (more…)

Vendor changes name, rev’s virtual system software

DoubleWide has changed its name to Accenia, and is shipping the second version of its embedded systems virtualization software. DoubleWide Studio 2.0 offers better performance, flexibility, and ease of use, the company says, and will enable hardware and software developers to work together more closely. (more…)

Mobile Linux challenges Windows Mobile for cellphone dominance

Torvalds creates new Linux source code management tool

Embeddable Linux PIM suite gaining platform independence

A group of KDE developers is closing in on a PIM (personal information manager) suite that can run on Qtopia PDAs/smartphones as well as Linux, Windows, and Mac desktops. AMD ships first dual-core 64-bit x86 chips

AMD has started shipping dual-core models of its 64-bit Opteron processor for four- and eight-way servers, and will offer dual-core chips for desktop and desktop-replacement notebook users as well. The dual-core Opteron and Athlon64 chips can be used to upgrade 90nm-ready systems with only a BIOS change, the company says. (more…)

PC/104 SBCs feature enhanced thermals, Linux support

Parvus has released four new PC/104 form-factor embedded processor modules based on Intel's new ULV Celeron Tualatin processor and 815E chipset. Three of the modules target harsh mobile environments such as trains, buses, aircraft, and tanks, and are compatible with embedded Linux, according to the company. (more…)

Chinese semi vendor ships general-purpose 64-bit MIPS-like chip

Chinese semiconductor vendor BLX IC is shipping a faster successor to its Godson-1 processor, according to the EETimes UK. The 300-500MHz Godson-2 has a 64-bit MIPS-like architecture, and can run office applications under Linux with performance similar to a Pentium-III, the company says. (more…)
