A group of web browser and plugin vendors today released an improved browser plugin API aimed at enabling web developers to make multimedia Web content more interactive. At the JavaOne tradeshow today in San Francisco, Sun Microsystems announced contributions to a new release of the free, open source NetBeans IDE that is expected to begin beta testing in July. LSI Logic is shipping an ARM1136-based core for cell-based ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) applications that it says is both the fastest ARM1136 core available, and the first delivered in RTL with a reference design. The ARM1136J-S core runs at 425MHz — a key fiber channel frequency, LSI says — and includes an MMU for full Linux support. (more…)

Intel is shipping two new processors in its “Pentium M” line targeting mobile and low-power embedded devices. The 1.5GHz “715” and 1.6GHz “725” are Dothan chips built with 90nm technology that will enable “a broader range of Intel Centrino mobile technology-based mobile PCs at lower price points,” according to Intel. Nexedi.org has published an article introducing “umibuilder,” an interesting free software tool that “allows rapid creation of [shrink] wrapped GNU/Linux solutions which can then be distributed on flash memory or on live CD.” The tool is perhaps most useful for automating security updates of embedded systems incorporating Mandrake Linux.
