Linux dev kit brings ZigBee data to industrial apps

Open source compiler demos speed, compactness with boottime compile trick

A project to build a C compiler small enough to enable C to be used as a scripting language has released an impressive technology demonstration: a bootloader that uses the Tiny C Compiler (TCC) to compile a Linux kernel from source at boot-time in as little as 15 seconds. (more…)

Wind River exec leaves for WiFi/Linux startup

A 13-year Wind River executive has left the company to head up a startup focused on WiFi. Dave Fraser is now CEO of Instant802, a venture-funded company that sells Linux-oriented software stacks for wireless access points, central management servers, and network clients such as printers and projectors. AMD ships everyman’s PC — but where’s the Linux?

WindowsForDevices reports that AMD is shipping an extremely low-cost PC that it hopes will help the personal computer achieve 50 percent market penetration worldwide by 2015. The $185 Personal Internet Computer (PIC) ($249 with a monitor) runs Windows CE, but looks capable of running Linux. (more…)

RTLinux-GPL learns to share Linux TCP/IP stack

A new open source project aims to enable RTLinux-GPL threads to use the normal Linux TCP/IP stack. The OCERA network daemon (onetd) project is part of OCERA, (Open Components for Embedded Real-Time Applications), a European Union-funded project to enhance Linux with real-time capabilities. (more…)

Italian real-time Linux distro adds support for x86, ARM SBCs

Italian embedded Linux house Koan Software says that its real-time embedded Linux distribution for industrial applications now supports several x86 and ARM-based SBCs (single board computers) from BOSER and ICOP. KLinux is based on RTAI (real-time application interface). (more…)

IP lawyer advises ESC attendees on best practices

Intellectual property (IP) lawyer Edmund J. Walsch warned attendees at September's Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) in Boston that unless a company has a “well-defined technical and legal strategy,” using open source software imperils IP rights and increases the risk of lawsuits.
