Startup a la Mobile reports that its Linux-based mobile phone stack has attracted its first licensee. Gupp Technologies, a Malaysian startup backed by global electronics vendor 3P Electronics, will use the Convergent Linux Platform in a dual-mode VoWiFi (voice-over-WiFi) and GSM smartphone expected next year, according to a la Mobile. Despite a soft second quarter, both in terms of units and average selling prices, the mobile phone market is expected to achieve shipments of one billion units this year, according to ABI Research. An open source project maintaining a Linux-based operating system for thin clients has achieved a new release. Thinstation 2.2 runs on off-the-shelf thin clients or superannuated PCs, supports “all major connectivity protocols” and can be configured with a footprint as little as 6MB, a project spokesperson said.
