Public key cryptography turns thirty

The thirtieth anniversary of public key cryptography was celebrated on Oct. 28 at an event co-sponsored by Voltage Security Inc. and the Computer History Museum of Silicon Valley. Taiwanese board-vendor Acrosser is shipping a 96-bit PCI-bus I/O card with discrete I/O, on-board SRAM, and a host of built-in security features. The AR-B2002 supports Linux, and targets casino gaming machines and industrial control applications. (more…)

Nokia’s 330 is simply a navigation device

Nokia's “330” device — previously rumored to be a follow-up to the company's Linux-based 770 Internet tablet — turns out to be a simple in-car navigational device. The 330 will come standard with maps of Europe, and sell for about 360 Euros, according to reports. (more…)

Google enhances Gmail for mobile phones

Google has enhanced its free “Gmail” service with two new interface options for mobile phone users. A new “m.gmail.com” site features a greatly simplified interface for phones with HTML browsers, while a Java download enables Gmail account access from any Web- and Java-enabled device, the company says. Symbol Technologies will soon release a Linux powered, multi-protocol, multi-frequency wireless switch. The RFS7000, expected early next year, aims to help business deploy and centrally manage devices throughout the RF (radio frequency) spectrum, Symbol says. (more…)

Microsoft opens full Windows CE kernel source

In its most tacit acknowledgment yet of the power of open source, Microsoft is distributing complete kernel sources to all recipients of its Windows CE 6.0 SDK, released today. Security company prescribes Linux for sick Windows PCs

PC Tools will add a Linux-based boot image to its security auditing software for Windows PCs. The company says that when run under Linux, Spyware Doctor can detect and remove “persistent spyware such as rootkits and keyloggers that launch and hide themselves in the OS when Windows is booted.” (more…)

Red Hat touts telecom readiness

Red Hat says 29 ISVs (independent software vendors) have joined its Telecommunications Partner Program during the last six months. Additionally, the company says it is working with leading NEPs (network equipment providers), ISVs, and operators to define requirements and ensure that RHEL can be deployed in carrier-grade settings. Carrier Grade Linux targets Sun’s UltraSPARC T1

Wind River has completed an “evaluation port” of its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) stack to Sun's UltraSPARC T1, and plans to offer the industry's first commercial CGL support for the chip, by mid-2007. Wind River describes the 8-way, 64-bit processor as a “breakthrough” processor for next-generation compute-intensive communications server platforms. (more…)
