Cute little MicroTCA box comes with Linux

Kontron has announced a cute little 3U, five-slot MicroTCA system that will ship pre-installed with Wind River Linux. The OM6040 boasts “single-star” PCI Express (PCIe) and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) backplanes, and support for either PowerPC- or IA-based AMC (advanced mezzanine card) processor modules. (more…)

3.5-inch SBC gains PC/104-Plus expansion

Kontron has expanded its JRex family of 3.5-inch single board computers (SBCs) with a new model that includes a PC/104-Plus expansion slot. While smaller than the classic PC/104-Plus form factor, the Linux-compatible “JRexplus-LX” can be used with most available PC/104 cards, Kontron says. (more…)

DSP-powered CompactFlash computer runs uClinux

A British systems integrator has developed a second-generation computer based on the CompactFlash (CF) format. C Data Solutions's Compact Computer (CoCo) runs uClinux on a 500MHz Blackfin DSP (digital signal processor), and offers programmable I/O via an integrated FPGA (field-programmable gate array). Intel releases Fiber Channel-over-Ethernet stack for Linux

Intel Corp. has released “initiator” source code to enable Linux implementations of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). By allowing fiber channel SAN traffic to run over Gigabit Ethernet networks, says Intel, storage area network (SAN) and LAN traffic can be consolidated, simplifying network infrastructure in datacenters. NASA mandates open source for next-gen avionics system

NASA has reportedly called for “open source specifications” in Boeing's contract to build a next-generation avionics system. The avionics system will guide Ares rockets responsible for launching the manned Orion spacecraft into Earth orbit, and then driving it to the moon. (more…)

Linux phone industry groups should talk, blogger says

In an interesting blog post earlier this month, Wind River's GM of mobile phones called for cooperation between two mobile Linux industry groups. Linux Foundation to co-host conference in Beijing

The Linux Foundation (LF) announced it will co-host a conference in Beijing, China this winter. Set for February 19-20 in Beijing, the Chinese OSS Promotion Union's “Linux Developer Symposium” includes an embedded and mobile Linux track, and presentations from kernel developers Matt Mackall, Jonathan Corbet, and Andrew Morton. Linux-based POS device achieves PCI PED certification
