PICMG card debuts Intel’s Q35 chipset

Industrial computer manufacturer IEI Technology Corp. announced a new PICMG 1.3 CPU card based on Intel's Q35 Express Chipset. The PCIE-Q350 is one of the first cards based on the power-efficient Q35, which supports upcoming 45nm versions of Intel Core 2 Duo processors. (more…)

Ted T’so to boost the Linux Standards Base

Linux kernel developer Ted Ts'o will join the Linux Foundation for two years as fellow and chief platform strategist. There, Ts'o plans on extending the LSB (Linux Standard Base) with the aim of making it easier for ISVs (independent software vendors) to target multiple Linux distributions. (more…)

EMF changes tune, hails embedded Linux

Linux-based consumer products drive Wind River earnings

Wind River yesterday announced solid 3Q earnings, touting wins in embedded Linux consumer electronics. In its earnings call yesterday, the Alameda, Calif.-based embedded Linux OS and tools vendor pointed to the growth in Linux-based mobile handsets and telematics as key drivers of the company's growth. Chip vendor invests in virtualization company

Texas Instruments (TI) has made an undisclosed equity investment in virtualization software company VirtualLogix. Discount ASIC vendor promotes Linux-friendly core

Configurable processor manufacturer Tensilica and fabless ASIC vendor eASIC have started promoting a deal claimed to make ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) more cost-competitive with FPGAs (field-programmable gate arrays). The promotion gives customers “free access” to Tensilica cores and DSPs, with no mask charges or minimum orders, according to eASIC. (more…)

Chip vendors partner on Linux switches

Two fabless networking chip vendors will collaborate on Linux-based reference designs for managed enterprise switches and SOHO/SMB routers. The designs will combine Cavium's multi-core MIP64-based Octeon processors with Broadcom's StrataXGS and RoboSwitch Gigabit Ethernet switches, and run Linux along with LVL7's Fastpath TCP/IP stack. RISC/DSP chip comes with Linux, targets HD video

Texas Instruments (TI) announced a new DaVinci family chip claimed capable of transcoding high-definition video at line rates. The TMS320DM6467 system-on-chip (SoC) weds a 297MHz ARM9 core with a 600MHz C64+ DSP, and is available with a development board and software stack based on MontaVista Linux. (more…)
