Linux-friendly hardware probe picks up speed

Swiss hardware tools vendor Abatron has started shipping a new Linux-compatible hardware debug probe. Compared to the company's older BDI2000, the new BDI3000 offers a faster 10/100 Ethernet interface, support for lower target voltages, and faster flash programming speeds up to 1.5Mbps, Abatron claims. HP debuts Linux-based thin client

Hewlett-Packard unveiled its first new thin clients since acquiring Neoware last fall. Among the new products is a Debian- based “t5735” model featuring a CPU and GPU (graphics processor unit) from AMD, which acquired GPU specialist ATI recently. (more…)

High-performance Linux IPC stack upgraded

Enea has released a major upgrade to its highly scalable open source (BSD or GPL) interprocess communications stack for Linux. Linx 2.0 for Linux aims to let Linux-based telecom equipment interoperate better with Enea's Element high-availability middleware and OSE RTOS, while offering full backward and forward compatibility for in-field upgrades, Enea says. Nokia to acquire Trolltech for $150 million

Finnish handset manufacturer Nokia is acquiring Norwegian phone-stack vendor Trolltech in a deal worth about $150 million USD. Expected to close in the second quarter, the acquisition increases the likelihood that Nokia will move beyond its Symbian operating system (OS) toward using Linux in its phones. (more…)

Linux-based industrial computer can take the heat (and cold)

VSCom introduced a RISC-based industrial embedded computer that runs Linux. The ARM9-based OpenRISC Alekto comes with Debian Linux, can withstand temperatures from 14 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit, and provides interfaces including Ethernet, USB, I2C, serial, and digital I/O for hooking up industrial devices. Linux-based NAS expands to four bays

Qnap Systems introduced a four-bay version of its Linux-based line of multifunction NAS (network-attached storage) devices. The TS-409 Pro Turbo NAS offers a hot-swappable HDD design, RAID 0/ 1/ 5/ 6/ 5+ support, and online RAID capacity expansion and level migration, says Qnap. (more…)

Mobile phone market grew 15.8 percent, study says

An ABI Research study claims that 2007 mobile phone sales closed strong, with yearly shipments up 15.8 percent to 1.15 billion. Fourth quarter 2007 worldwide shipments totaled 342 million, meeting ABI's earlier projections, but Motorola continued to lose market share. (more…)

Rollup e-reader runs Linux

[Updated Jan. 25] — Philips spinoff Polymer Vision has announced plans to ship a Linux-capable e-reader with a flexible, rollup display. Thanks to the screen's low power consumption, the “Readius” offers up to 30 hours of reading without a battery charge, according to the company. (more…)
