Eclipse rev’s mobile Java IDE

The Eclipse Foundation has updated its integrated development environment (IDE) for mobile Java application developers. Eclipse Mobile Tools for Java (MTJ) 0.9 aims to help developers target specific devices, including Linux phones from Motorola, which next month will release Motodev Studio for Java 2.0 based on MTJ, the Foundation says. ETX module adopts Atom

Kontron added Intel's Atom N270 CPU to its series of ETX computer-on-modules (COMs). Touted as a “long life” product with a seven-year life, the ETX-DC accepts 2GB of RAM, has an optional TPM (trusted platform module), and runs Linux, says Kontron. (more…)

Adobe reiterates OSP commitment

Adobe today released version 10 of its Flash Player, coordinating the launch across desktop Linux, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems. And, it reiterated its commitment to work with the Open Screen Project, an effort that could eventually make Flash as ubiquitous on Linux devices as PCs. (more…)

SoHo NAS devices run EMC Linux

Iomega is shipping a new home-oriented “StorCenter” network-attached storage (NAS) system. The Iomega StorCenter ix2 comes in 1TB ($300) and 2TB ($480) versions, with gigabit Ethernet, dual USB ports, optional Bluetooth, and a new homegrown Linux implementation that incorporates RSA security and file-sharing software. 2.6.27 adds dual-core Feroceon support

Kernel patches supporting three new Feroceon-architecture system-on-chip (SoC) families from Marvell have been merged into the mainline Linux 2.6.27 kernel. The patches cover the low-power, dual- and single-core MV7x SoCs, as well as Marvell's Kirkwood (88F6000) SoC and upcoming Loki (88RC8480) SoC. (more…)

Touch-enabled net-top boots Linux fast

In November, Asus will ship a $400 Windows-based “nettop” that includes an integrated touchscreen and Linux-based “Express Gate” quick boot technology. The “Eee Top” reportedly has a 15-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and a gigabit Ethernet port. (more…)

LSB 4 is out the door — almost

The Linux Foundation's community manager, Brian Proffitt, today announced a “beta” release of version 4 of the Linux Standards Base (LSB 4). Linux powers in-flight entertainment centers

Australia's top airline carrier has reportedly chosen Linux in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems for four planes. The report says Qantas will deploy Panasonic's new EX2 IFEs, which Panasonic says use fiber channel backbones to deliver movies, news, shopping, and other services to up to 600 passengers. (more…)

Triple-core DSP runs Linux

Texas Instruments (TI) announced a triple-core digital signal processor (DSP) that can run paravirtualized Linux using VirtualLogix's VLX virtualization software. The single-die TMS320C6474 integrates three TMS320C64x+ cores running at 1GHz each, and targets DSP farms in communications infrastructure, medical imaging, military communications, and industrial vision inspection. EPIC SBC goes DDR3

Axiomtek announced an EPIC format single-board computer (SBC) targeting digital signage, DVR (digital video recorder), and gaming applications. The EP850 supports Intel's 45nm Core 2 Duo T9400 processor, accepts 4GB of DDR3 RAM, includes two gigabit Ethernet ports, and has a PCI-104 expansion slot, says Axiomtek. (more…)

Intel CEO: Linux to dominate MIDs

Intel CEO Paul Otellini (pictured) reportedly told the Associated Press that Linux will dominate sales of mobile Internet devices (MIDs). Meanwhile, ABI Research predicts that by 2013, Linux will outsell Windows by two to one in the combined market for MIDs, netbooks, and UMPCs. (more…)

Targeting telecom/datacom applications, the Linux-compatible Kontron CP6016 offers up to 16GB of RAM, five gigabit Ethernet ports, six SATA II ports, and a PMC/XMC (PCI Mezzanine Card/Switched Mezzanine Card) site, says Kontron.
