Wind River to herd LiMo integration efforts

The LiMo Foundation has chosen Wind River as the official “systems integrator” for the LiMo Platform. Wind River will provide “common infrastructure, tools, testing, and integration services,” for the Linux-based mobile phone specification, moving forward into the new LiMo R2 release, says the embedded tools company. Smartphones strong, despite recession

The smartphone market will slow to a 13 percent growth rate in 2009, but will rebound in 2010, projects Forward Concepts in a recent study. Forward Concepts also suggests that Linux's current share (11 percent) has been given a boost by the Android-based HTC G1 (pictured). (more…)

Little panel PC uses “two Watt” X86 SoC

Icop has announced a little panel PC built around the company's own 32-bit, x86-compatible SoC (system-on-chip). The PDX-057T has a 5.7-inch touchscreen display, 256MB or 512MB of RAM, CompactFlash Type I/II and microSD storage, and a Mini PCI slot, according to the company. (more…)

Six carriers promise LiMo phones in 2009

Six major global operators today affirmed their expectation of shipping mobile phones based on the Linux Mobile Foundation's (LiMo's) flavor of Linux during 2009. LiMo, meanwhile, announced its second, more ambitious spec, five compliant royalty-free reference implementations, and two powerful new board members, global mobile operators Telefónica and SK Telecom. Virtualized desktops “run anywhere”

Citrix announced a new version of its software for delivering virtualized Windows desktops to thin clients, including Linux devices. XenDesktop 3 enables desktops to be run remotely or locally, supports twice as many desktops per server, and includes “HDX MediaStream” technology for multimedia acceleration, the company says. COM Express module accepts 4GB RAM

Congatec announced its fourth COM (computer on module) using an Intel Atom processor, targeting “mobile and fanless” applications. The conga-BA945 has a COM Express form factor, accepts a whopping 4GB of RAM, has eight USB ports and two serial ports, and includes PCIe expansion, says Congatec. (more…)

Microsoft patent deal covers Linux printers

Microsoft and Brother Industries have entered into a broad patent cross-licensing agreement that enables access to each company's respective patent portfolio, including Brother's embedded Linux printing products. Aimed at boosting R&D efforts, the agreement includes compensation paid to Microsoft by Brother, say the companies. (more…)

World’s largest mobile operator takes LiMo

The Linux Mobile Foundation (LiMo) got a huge boost today, when global carrier Vodafone, world's largest wireless operator (by sales), tapped U.S. software firm Azingo to develop Linux-based mobile applications.
