Wind River reports strong year, lowers guidance

Wind River reported strong fourth quarter and fiscal year 2009 revenues, but showed higher than expected 4Q GAAP losses, and offered lowered guidance for the next quarter and fiscal 2010. Wind River's 4Q Linux bookings, meanwhile, grew 48 percent year over year, says the company. (more…)

New COM Express standards proposed

Kontron has joined with Aaeon, Adlink, and Advantech to propose the new “COM Express Ultra” standard for COMs (computer-on-modules). Compatible with the COM Express Type I pinouts and connector location, the 84 x 55mm form factor adds a separate connector for SDVO (serial digital video out). (more…)

DaVinci chip boasts 1080p video

Texas Instruments (TI) is sampling its latest DaVinci SoC, said to support 1080p video even with the demanding H264 codec. The TMS320DM365 has a new ISP (image signal processor), a 300MHz ARM926EJ-S core, plus multiple on-board peripherals, and is available with a Linux-ready evaluation kit (pictured). (more…)

Second Atom N280 netbook unveiled

Asus has unveiled its second netbook using Intel's 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor. The “Eee PC 1008HA” is just an inch thick, weighs 2.4 pounds, has a 10-inch LED-backlit display and 160GB hard disk drive, and delivers five-hour battery life, the company says. (more…)

ARM9 modules offer WiFi support

Digi International is readying two ARM9-based, network-enabled embedded modules that run Linux or Windows CE. Equipped with a Samsung S3C2443 SoC, the ConnectCore 9M 2443 and WiFi-enabled ConnectCore Wi-9M 2443 offer a variety of interfaces, including Ethernet, USB, serial, and camera support, says Digi. Adata spins 512GB SSD

Adata has announced a 2.5-inch SSD (solid state drive) with 512GB of storage and an SATA II interface, targeting “notebook and PC enthusiasts.” The “512GB XPG” (left) offers read speeds up to 230MB/sec. and writes up to 160MB/sec., the company says. (more…)

Tiny x86-compatible CPU module runs Debian

Intel and Wind River buddy up on multicore

After solidifying their partnership on single-core Intel Atom processors, Wind River and Intel are now collaborating on multicore. The two companies announced they will market multicore solutions for the embedded market, including versions of Wind River Linux and its new hypervisor technology tuned to Intel architecture multicore processors. Freescale re-purposes automotive chips

Freescale is sampling a pair of new ARM11-based system-on-chip processors (SoCs) targeting industrial and consumer devices running Linux and other embedded OSes. The i.MX353 and i.MX357 omit the MLB (media local bus) and automotive focus of other i.MX35 parts, and with $12 pricing in volume, target a broader customer base. (more…)
