HP launches new business netbook

HP has added to its bevy of netbooks with a business-oriented mini PC using Intel's Atom N280 processor. The “HP Mini 5101” includes a “95 percent” keyboard, available 1366 x 768-pixel display, hard- or solid-state disk (SSD) storage, and optional mobile broadband module, the company says. (more…)

Android phone boasts customizable UI

HTC has announced its third Android-driven smartphone, debuting an HTC-designed customizable user interface (UI). The HTC Hero adds new styling, Adobe Flash support, and a five megapixel camera to the similar HTC Magic and MyTouch 3G designs, and introduces a new UI layer called HTC Sense. (more…)

Linux router moves up to 802.11n

Cisco's Linksys division announced a Linux-powered router supporting the faster, wider-range 802.11n WiFi spec. The “Linksys by Cisco Wireless-N Broadband Router with Storage Link (WRT160NL)” offers USB “Storage Link” connections, a UPnP AV media server, and connectors for optional external antennas, says Cisco/Linksys. Standardization underway for Mini PCIe SSDs

Samsung says it is sampling a netbook SSD (solid state drive) that offers a standardized, 3.0Gb/sec. SATA interface. Using a Mini PCI Express form factor, the drive comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities, and is almost eighty percent smaller than 2.5-inch disks, the company says. (more…)

Flash Player 10 to go full desktop

Adobe says a “full desktop” Flash player for Linux smartphones will be released in beta form this October. Flash Player 10 will also be available for handsets running Android, Palm's WebOS, Windows Mobile, or Nokia's Symbian — but the iPhone and BlackBerry were left unmentioned. (more…)

Intel and Nokia partner on mobile Linux devices

Intel Corp. and Nokia announced a long-term partnership to develop “a new class of Intel Architecture-based mobile computing device and chipset architectures.” In the near term, the deal calls for collaboration between the Linux-based Moblin and Maemo mobile platforms, and Intel's acquisition of a Nokia HSPA/3G modem IP license. Sun upgrades Linux-compatible toolchain

Sun Microsystems is shipping an upgrade to its Linux-compatible Sun Studio software compiler and toolchain, boasting faster compiling and a new visual profiling tool. In addition to announcing Sun Studio 12 Update 1, Sun announced version 2.0 of its HPC Software Linux Edition, touted for “faster and simpler cluster deployments.” (more…)

Carrier adds second Android phone

T-Mobile announced a new Android-based phone from HTC that will go on sale for its U.S. 3G network customers on July 8. The MyTouch 3G smartphone is based on the keyboard-less HTC Magic introduced recently in Europe by Vodafone, but adds customization features and accessories. (more…)

8TB NAS device taps Kirkwood SoC

Synology America is shipping a four-bay network-attached storage (NAS) device for small to medium-sized (SMB) businesses, supporting up to 8TB of storage capacity. The DS409 is equipped with Marvell's new 1.2GHz 88F6281 “Kirkwood” system-on-chip with 256MB RAM, and draws under 43 Watts, the company claims. (more…)

Network security appliances use Atom N270

AR Infotek has employed Intel's Atom N270 to create three different, fanless network security appliances. The Teak 3030, 3031, and 3035L all include four gigabit Ethernet connectors, LAN bypass functionality, CompactFlash storage, and DB9 ports for serial consoles, the company says. (more…)

Stealth Computer announced an “extreme environment” PC that routes all its I/O through locking, bayonet-style connectors (left). The fanless, Linux-friendly WPC-500F uses a dual-core Atom 330, includes hard disk or solid-state disk storage, and operates on input power ranging from 10 to 30VDC, the company says. (more…)

Palm responds to Apple iTunes threat

Glomation announced an ARM9-based single-board computer (SBC) that consumes only 0.25 Amps. The 3.75 x 3.5-inch GESBC-9G20 is equipped with an Atmel AT91SAM9G20 system-on-chip clocked to 400MHz, and offers Ethernet, USB, and serial connections, among other I/O, says the company. (more…)

OpenSource World announces keynote speakers

IDG World Expo has announced speakers for its inaugural OpenSource World 2009 show (formerly LinuxWorld) on Aug. 12-13 in San Francisco. California Secretary of State Debra Bowen will keynote the conference, which will feature presentations on Linux desktops, netbooks, Android, mobile devices, enterprise, security, troubleshooting, and numerous “cloud” topics.
