6U CompactPCI SBC runs Linux

Concurrent Technologies announced a 6U CompactPCI SBC aimed at the defense, industrial control, and transportation markets. The PP 531/06x includes a dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo clocked at 1.86GHz or 2.26GHz, up to 8GB of soldered DDR3 SDRAM, dual PMC/XMC sites, and four gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

IPTV Soc adds Linux, multi-format video support

NEC Electronics is shipping a Linux-ready image-processing system-on-chip for IP set-top boxes (STBs). The EMMA3SL/P offers dual MIPS32 cores, is compliant with H.264 high definition (HD) and China's audio/video standard (AVS), and offers multi-format video support for IPTV, says the company.

Media control point adopts plug-in computer design

Eyecon Technologies has announced a media “control point” reference design based on Marvell's tiny, Linux-based SheevaPlug Plug Computer reference design. Due this fall from unnamed consumer electronics companies, the device offers an embedded version of Eyecon's UPnP/DLNA-compatible home media content aggregation software, says the company.

VoIP desktop phone design runs Android

A San Francisco-based startup announced an Android-based VoIP desktop phone for business users. Powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP SoC and a SIP-ready AudioCodes VoIP processor, Cloud Telecomputers' reference platform offers an 8-inch, 800 x 600 touchscreen, handset, Bluetooth, HD speakerphone, and an open, Android-based “Glass” development platform.

Smartphone vendor slammed over privacy abuses

Palm has been accused of collecting private data from Pre smartphone users, says eWEEK. In other Pre news on eWEEK, Apple's Steve Jobs allegedly offered Palm a potentially illegal Pre-related non-compete agreement back in 2007, and an analyst predicts rough sailing for the Pre unless it quickly adds more apps.

PCI Express won’t speed up until 2011

The PCI SIG has officially delayed the release of the PCI Express 3.0 specification until the second quarter of 2010. As a result, graphics cards and other products tapping into the new spec's 7.99GT/sec. (gigatransfers per second) bandwidth won't be released until 2011, according to industry reports.

Open source media framework rev’d

The Novell-backed Moonlight project announced a beta version of Moonlight 2.0, an open source Linux/Unix clone of Microsoft's Silverlight multimedia framework. Moonlight 2.0 offers improved media streaming enabling media codecs like Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Theora, and BBC Dirac, via a runtime for its sister project, .NET clone Mono.

Nokia’s Linux smartphone previewed

[Updated: 6PM] — A technology site has published specs, photos, and Maemo 5 screenshots from the Nokia RX-51 smartphone. Heir to both Nokia's N810 Internet Tablet and N97 smartphone, the RX-51 (N900) runs the former's Linux-based Maemo OS instead of Symbian, and is a “true mobile powerhouse,” according to Mobile-Review.

Linux kernel developers increase by 10 percent

The Linux Foundation has published an update to a study it first did last year regarding Linux kernel development. For each kernel release there has been a 10 percent increase in the number of contributing developers, delivering 2.7 million lines of code and a 42 percent increase in patch acceptance, the study reports.

Palm seeking submissions for App Catalog beta

Those developing applications for the Linux-based Pre smartphone can now submit them to be considered for inclusion in an upcoming “Palm App Catalog” beta. The test version of Palm's online store will open in mid-September, the company said in a blog posting yesterday.

Box PC has Atom, optional PCI slot

Datasound Laboratories has announced a pair of Linux-ready, fanless box PCs employing 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processors. The ACS-2663 and ACS-2664 include hard disk and CompactFlash storage, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, plus both VGA and DVI video outputs, the company says.

ARM9 SoC has mixed-signal analog onboard, too

Freescale has announced an ARM9 SoC (system-on-chip) aimed at a bevy of consumer electronics applications. The i.MX233 includes a 454MHz core and adds mixed-signal technology such as analog audio, integrated power management, and a monaural audio amplifier, the company says.

Netbook runs Ubuntu

Denver-based System76 is selling a netbook that includes preinstalled Ubuntu 9.04. The Starling includes a 10-inch display, the usual Intel Atom N270 CPU, a 160GB hard disk drive, and a six-cell battery, the company says.

ARM11 MID runs Android

Shenzhen State Micro Technology (SMiT) has announced a MID (mobile internet device) that's claimed to run Android 1.5. The MID-560 has a five-inch touchscreen display with 800 x 480 resolution, a 667MHz Samsung S3C6410 processor, GPS, WiFi, and up to 8GB of flash storage, the company says.

Mobile processor market competition will heighten, In-Stat says

Analyst firm In-Stat expects the mobile processor market to see heightened competition in the second half of 2009, as x86 chip makers continue to drive down power consumption and ARM vendors grow the performance of their processors by adding more cores. In-Stat also expects to see the mobile processor market grow 22.3 percent by 2013, reports eWEEK's Jeffrey Burt.
