Intel will ship a new generation of Atom processors, code-named “Pineview,” during the fourth quarter of this year, according to an IDG News Service report. The CPUs — known as the Atom N450, D410, and D510 — will extend netbook battery life and allow HD video playback, among other previously cited advantages.
Diamond Systems is shipping an ETX 3.0-compliant computer-on-module designed to withstand temperatures between -40 to 185 deg. F (-40 to 86 deg. C). The ETX-945 incorporates Intel's Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, or Celeron processors, and can be bought with preconfigured ETX and EPIC baseboard modules incorporating PC/104-Plus expansion interfaces.
Via has announced a Mini-ITX motherboard that sports both integrated and discrete graphics circuitry, supporting up to four monitors. The Via VB8003 includes a Nano processor, dual HDMI outputs, VGA and DVI ports, two gigabit Ethernet ports, and a Type II CompactFlash slot, the company says.
Intel has announced an Atom-based SoC (system-on-chip) aimed at consumer devices such as digital TVs, set-top boxes (STBs), and Internet-enabled Blu-ray players. The 1.2GHz CE4100 uses only seven to nine Watts, can decode two simultaneous 1080p video streams, provides seven-channel audio output, and will be able to accelerate Adobe Flash-based content, the company says.
The final Moblin v2.0 distro is available, says the Moblin project, which also released early-preview versions of a “Moblin Garage” app store, Moblin installer, and Moblin v2.1. Meanwhile, the first netbook with Moblin v2.0 comes from Dell, whose Mini 10v is available pre-installed with the 'Ubuntu Moblin Remix Developer Edition.”
Vodafone announced a Samsung-built, “360 H1” smartphone that offers a 3.5-inch WVGA AMOLED display and complies with the LiMo Foundation's LiMo Release 2 spec. The LiMo Foundation also announced that all of its operator-members intend to field LiMo R2 devices in 2009 and 2010.
Intel has launched an Intel Atom Developer Program, offering SDKs, tech support, and an online store to netbook software developers. This week's Intel Developer Forum (IDF) also included a demo of a MID-oriented Moblin 2.1 for Handhelds, showing off mobile telephony capabilities.
NorhTec has announced a tablet computer that will cost just $300, run Ubuntu Linux on a 1GHz SoC (system-on-chip), and operate via eight AA batteries. The “Gecko Info Pad” will include an 8.9-inch touchscreen display, 8GB of solid state storage, and needs no external power brick, the company says.
TabletKiosk announced three portable computers running OpenSUSE Linux 11 on Intel Atom processors, two of them seven-inch UMPCs (ultra mobile PCs) with built-in Wacom digitizers. The UMPCs are the Eo a7330D and the ruggedized TufTab a7230XD, joined by the 12.1-inch Sahara NetSlate a230T tablet, according to the company.
Samsung Electronics announced two system-on-chips based on ARM's Cortex-A8 cores, with the S5PC110 aimed at high-end smartphones, and the S5PV210 targeting portable computing devices, such as netbooks. Both SoCs are fabricated with 45nm technology, clocked at 1GHz, capable of 1080p video, and imbued with “intricate low power architectures,” says Samsung.
RMI Corp. announced a design win for its MIPS-based Au1250 processor in a Linux-based home energy monitoring system. Threshold Corp.'s Au1250-based device monitors and manages energy consumption in real time, and appears to incorporate the company's NFC-based “BlueSpot” auto-configuration technology.
Arium announced the release of Linx hardware and software debugging components that now support Intel's Atom CPU. Version 7.7.1 of the SourcePoint debugging software also adds code trace and flash programming functionality, together with Arium's now-Linux-ready ECM-XDP3 hardware emulator, says the company.
Pure announced a touchscreen-based Internet radio that also supports FM, DAB, and podcast playback. The Sensia offers a 5.7-inch, 640 x 480 color touchscreen, WiFi, and network media streaming, and includes touch-based apps like weather, news, Picasa, Facebook, and Twitter.
Via has announced two new motherboards for products it calls “netnotes,” splitting the difference between the netbook and notebook monikers. The Surfboard VT6549 and VT6552 offer HD video playback, courtesy of the VX855 chipset, and are also offered inside built-up “NetNote Turnkey Systems,” the company says.
VersaLogic announced an SBC (single board computer) combining SUMIT (stackable unified module interconnect technology) interface with an ISM (industry standard module) form factor. The “Ocelot” offers fanless operation with 1.6 or 1.33GHz Intel Atom CPUs, three PCI Express x1 lanes, and a connector for SPX expansion modules, says VersaLogic.
