LAN appliance hosts 32nm Core CPUs

Lanner announced a network appliance that employs Intel's recently announced, 32nm Core i3 or Core i5 CPUs. The FW-8760 offers eight gigabit Ethernet ports, up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM, Mini PCI and PCI Express expansion slots, and storage via either CompactFlash or hard disk drives, the company says.

Google delays Android launch in China after hacking dispute

Google announced that it was delaying the launch of two Android phones in China due to a dispute with the Chinese government over censorship issues. The delay will affect Google-endorsed Android phones from Samsung and Motorola that were to be carried by China Unicom, says an eWEEK story.

Dropping M2M costs spark rise of the machines, says study

Juniper Research is projecting that the number of wireless M2M (machine to machine) embedded devices will rise to almost 412 million by 2014. The fast growth will be led by utility metering, followed by mobile connected buildings, telematics, and automated retail and banking connections, says the company.

ATX board supports 32nm Core CPUs

Ibase Technology has become the latest company to support Intel's recently announced, embedded-specific Core processors, with its MB950 ATX motherboard. The device offers up to 16GB of RAM, two gigabit Ethernet ports, four PCI slots, three PCI Express slots, and an ISA slot, the company says.

Mot Android phone touted for video features

Motorola is readying a video-oriented smartphone that runs Android 2.0 for SK Telecom's Korean network. The “Motoroi” offers a 3.7 inch WVGA touchscreen, eight-megapixel camera with 720p video recording, a T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) receiver, WiFi, and an HDMI port, says the company.

Android tablet offers WiFi, optional 3G

Taiwan-based startup Camangi is shipping an Android-based tablet computer with a 7-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen. The WebStation is equipped with an ARM-based 624MHz Marvell PXA303 processor, and offers GPS, WiFi, and 3G USB dongle support, but a Laptop review faulted it for spotty video performance and limited viewing angles.

ESC Silicon Valley details 2010 program

The EETimes Group has begun releasing details of its ESC (Embedded Systems Conference) Silicon Valley, scheduled for April. 26-29 in San Jose. The event will feature a variety of new keynote speakers, a “Developing with Open-Source Software ” track, plus an expansion of the popular “Build your Own Embedded System Event,” the organizers say.

EPIC SBC has new Core i7 on board

Avalue announced an EPIC form-factor SBC (single board computer) employing Intel's embedded-specific Core i7-620LE and i7-620UE processors. The EPI-QM57 includes up to 4GB of RAM, two gigabit Ethernet ports, Type I/II CompactFlash and ExpressCard/34 slots, and an optional touchscreen interface.

Linux-ready SoCs target consumer NAS devices

PLX Technology announced a Linux-ready NAS 7800 system-on-a-chip (SoC) family for home network attached storage (NAS) devices. The low-end NAS 7820 and NAS 7821 and the high-end NAS 7825 offer dual ARM11 processors clocked to 750MHz, network security engines and a variety of hardware acceleration engines, says the company.

Linux jobs site launches

The Linux Foundation (LF) has launched a Linux Jobs Board on Linux.com. Meanwhile, the LF is accepting requests for invitations for its Collaboration Summit on Apr. 14-16 in San Francisco, and the CE Linux Forum (CELF) Embedded Linux Conference is seeking papers for its co-located event, scheduled for Apr. 12-14.

Android 2.1 released as Linux 2.6.33 hits rc4

The Android community released the SDK for Android 2.1, which ships with Google's new Nexus One phone, and the Motorola Backflip phone is rumored for a March AT&T launch. Meanwhile, the Linux kernel that drives Android, as well as numerous devices, desktops, and servers, was released in a WiFi-focused Linux 2.6.33-rc4.

PC sales weather the storm — and portables shine

The PC market has “weathered the storm,” according to a new report by IDC. Buoyed by holiday price cuts in particular, fourth quarter PC sales grew 24 percent year-over-year in the U.S., and 2.3 percent worldwide, the market research firm reported yesterday.

Atom-based energy monitoring device taps Moblin

At CES, OpenPeak unveiled a prototype of its Intel Atom- and Moblin Linux-based Home Energy Manager (HEM) energy monitoring device, and announced partnerships with Direct Energy and GE. OpenPeak also announced that the OpenFrame IP phone upon which the HEM is based was certified with the ZigBee Alliance's Smart Energy Certification.

Touch subsystem supplies Android UI for microwaves, washers

Touch Revolution is shipping an Android-driven touchscreen subsystem that OEMs can “drop in” to microwave ovens, washing machines, printers, IP phones, and more. The Nimble NIM1000 module comprises an embedded board with a Marvell/ARM PXA310 clocked to 806MHz, and a 7-inch, WVGA projective capacitive touchscreen, says the company.

Advantech launches Core i7 flotilla

Advantech launched a flotilla of seven Linux-ready devices using Intel's new, embedded-oriented Core i7 processor. The products include two Mini-ITX motherboards (the AIMB-270 and AIMB-280), a microATX board (AIMB-580), an ATX motherboard (AIMB-780), the PICMG-format PCE-5125, the PCM-9593 “5.25-inch” SBC (single board computer), and the SOM-5788 COM Express module.
