Dell Streak will launch this week in U.S.

Dell announced that it will take pre-orders for its Dell Streak Android tablet on Thursday, with sales beginning the next day. Selling for $300 with a new two-year AT&T contract, and $550 without, the Dell Streak is as much a large phone as it is a tablet, offering voice telephony as well as a five-inch, WVGA display.

Industry group takes on open source compliance challenge

The Linux Foundation announced a program to help companies comply with open source licenses. The Open Compliance Program includes training, consulting, a self-assessment checklist, a standard format to report software licensing information, and tools for dependency checking, BoM analysis, and code clean-up,says the nonprofit organization.

COM Express modules ride the Atom bandwagon

Emerson Network Power announced two COM Express Type 2 modules based on Intel's “Pineview” Atoms. The COMX-430 and COMX-440 include up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, PCI Express and PCI expansion, and eight USB 2.0 ports apiece, the company says.

Droid 2 upgrades QWERTY slider to 1GHz

[Updated: 11:50AM] — Verizon Wireless and Motorola announced that an update to the latter's Droid smartphone will go on sale tomorrow. A keyboard-enabled alternative to the new Droid X, Motorola's Droid 2 runs Android 2.2 on a 1GHz processor, and includes a 3.7-inch WVGA display, five-megapixel camera, 3G mobile hotspot capabilities, and an improved slider keyboard.

3.5-inch SBC has multiple Ethernet ports

Commell announced a 3.5-inch single board computer (SBC) that uses single- or dual-core versions of Intel's “Pineview” Atoms. The LE-376 includes gigabit Ethernet, LVDS and VGA video outputs, up to 4GB of RAM, plus CompactFlash, PCI Express Mini, and Mini PCI slots, the company says.

Is Best Buy prepping an Android tablet?

Consumer electronics retail giant Best Buy has tipped an upcoming Android-based “Rocketfish” tablet, say industry reports. Meanwhile, the rumored Android tablet from Motorola and Verizon won't ship until Feb. 2011, and other tablets waiting for Android 3.0 may also miss the holiday season, sources say.

TI licenses next-generation ARM core

Texas Instruments (TI) announced it has become the first licensee for ARM's next-generation Cortex-A series processor core, currently code-named “Eagle.” The new core will form the basis of future, high-end CPUs for mobile devices, including entries in the OMAP product line, the company says.

Nexus One respun as Android Developer Phone

Several weeks after announcing the phase-out of its HTC-manufactured Nexus One phone for the consumer market, Google says that it has recast the phone as the official Android 2.2 Developer Phone. The Nexus One Developer Phone is being offered unlocked for $529, runs Android 2.2 on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and offers a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen and five-megapixel camera.

Xperia X10 Android phone comes stateside

AT&T announced that it will sell the Sony Ericsson Xperia 10 starting Aug. 15, giving the high-end Android smartphone its first U.S. debut. The Xperia X10 offers a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon system-on-chip (SoC), 8GB of internal flash, a four-inch display, a 8.1-megapixel camera, and other high-end features, but debuts with Android 1.6.

Fanless PC offers Core CPUs and ports aplenty

Nexcom announced a fanless PC that supports 32nm Intel processors including the 2.66Ghz Core i7-620M, 2.4GHz Core i5-520M, and Celeron 1.86GHz P4500. The NISE 3500 has a PCI/PCI Express expansion slot, VGA and DVI video outputs, dual eSATA ports, four serial ports, four GPIOs, plus optional IEEE 1394b and LVDS interfaces, the company says.

Large panel PC targets check-in, ordering

Axiomtek announced a 22-inch panel PC targeting applications such as check-in/out at airports and hotels, restaurant ordering, and visitor control. The IFO2225-830 has a sealed front bezel, a resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, a VGA output, plus four serial ports and four USB 2.0 ports, the company says.

Bedside PC features capacitive multi-touch

Poindus announced a panel PC designed to be a bedside terminal for hospital patients. Ready to support Fedora Linux, the “VariCura” has a 15-inch capacitive screen with multi-touch, a 1.3 megapixel camera, a phone that supports either POTS or VoiP, plus an optional barcode scanner, MSR (magnetic stripe reader), and smart card reader, the company says.

Acer announced a dual-boot netbook that comes with both Android and Windows XP. The Aspire One D255 has a 10.1-inch screen, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard disk drive, and a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, the company says.

Barcode scanners connect to Android phones via Bluetooth

KoamTac says its Bluetooth-interfaced barcode scanners can now send data to devices running Android, Windows Mobile, or Apple's iOS. The KDC200 and KDC300 scanners and companion KTSync software can enter codes as if they'd been typed via keyboard, or may be integrated with applications via a supplied SDK (software development kit), the company says.

Android makes enterprise inroads, but security still an issue

Android and Apple's iOS are making major inroads into the enterprise market, according to customer data from Good Technology. However, Android faces an uphill battle convincing enterprise customers it is sufficiently secure, even if some issues, such as the recent Android “wallpaper” scare, appear to be much ado about nothing, industry observers say.
