Hackable, Linux-based flying drone can be controlled by smartphone

Parrot S.A. is shipping a hackable $300 “quadrocopter” flying drone that runs Linux on a 468MHz ARM9 processor and may be remotely controlled by an iPhone. The AR Drone uses Wi-Fi to receive navigation instructions and transmit video from one of its dual cameras, and it ships with an SDK for developing multiplayer augmented reality games.

WiMAX will grow despite uncertainty, research firm says

The number of subscribers to mobile WiMAX services will approach 59 million by 2015, an ABI Research report projects. However, growth has been impeded by a combination of economic and psychological features, the firm adds.

Qnap Systems announced four new Business Series Turbo NAS (network attached storage) servers for SMB and corporate users, built around Intel's dual-core, 1.8GHz Atom D525 processor. The two-drive TS-259 Pro+ (4TB), four-drive TS-459 Pro+ (8TB), five-drive TS-559 Pro+ (10TB), and six-drive TS-659 Pro+ (12TB) all ship with 1GB RAM, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, iSCSI support, and newly updated Linux-based firmware.

Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) announced a Linux-ready, conduction- or air-cooled 3U cPCI single-board computer (SBC) based on Freescale's 1.5GHz, eight-core QorIQ P4080 system-on-chip (SoC). The XPedite5430 is equipped with up to 8GB of DDR3-1333 SDRAM, 16GB of NAND flash, PCI Express or Serial RapidIO expansion, plus gigabit Ethernet, serial, and USB connectivity.

Touchscreen PC can be mounted outdoors

Axiomtek has introduced a 15-inch panel PC designed to be mounted outdoors, in factories, in kitchens, or on board ships. Offered with resistive or capacitive touchscreens, the GOT-815 includes a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, up to 2GB of RAM, three serial ports, gigabit Ethernet, and a PCI Express Mini Card slot, the company says.

T-Mobile’s Android 2.2 phone launches on 4G-like HSPA+ network

T-Mobile USA announced an HTC-manufactured heir to its original G1 Android phone, touted as the first handset to support the company's new 4G-like HSPA+ network. The T-Mobile G2 runs Android 2.2 on a new 800MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7230 processor, and offers 4GB internal and 8GB external flash, dual cameras, and a 3.7-inch screen with a hinge-slider QWERTY keyboard.

ARM unveils next-gen, 2.5GHz Cortex-A15 processor

ARM announced the licensing availability of a “Cortex-A15 MPCore” for processors that will run at up to 2.5GHz. Designed for devices ranging from smartphones to server, the Cortex-A15 targets 32nm and 28nm fabrication processes, and is touted as offering enhanced virtualization support, 1TB memory access, plus five times the performance of current smartphone processors — all with similar power consumption.

DIN rail PC uses Via chipset

Korenix introduced an industrial computer with a wide operating range and a modicum of multimedia chops, thanks to Via's CX700M northbridge/southbridge. The DIN-rail-mountable JetBox 8150 runs fanlessly via a 1GHz Via Eden CPU, has CompactFlash and hard disk storage, provides two 10/100 Ethernet ports and two serial ports, and offers VGA output, the company says.

The Linux Foundation announced speakers for the Linux Foundation End User Summit, scheduled for Oct. 12-13, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City, in New Jersey. The invitation-only event, which features keynotes from the Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin and British Telecom Chief Scientist JP Rangaswami, brings together enterprise users and top Linux maintainers and developers.

Seven-inch tablet runs Android on Tegra 2

Amazon.com opened pre-order sales for a $370, seven-inch, Android 2.2 tablet from Stream TV Network. The eLocity A7 tablet is equipped with a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2, 512MB RAM, 4GB of flash memory, and offers a seven-inch capacitive display, an HDMI port for 1080p output, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 1.3-megapixel webcam, says Amazon.

Mini-ITX board targets embedded multimedia

Via announced a Mini-ITX board teaming 1.2GHz or 1.3+GHz versions of its embedded-oriented Nano E-Series 3000 processor with the HD video-ready VX900 core logic chip. The Via Epia-M850 offers support for HDMI, VGA, and LVDS displays, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, and a PCI Express x4 expansion slot, the company says.

Wind River board partners spin Intel-based embedded kits

Wind River announced a series of Wind River Linux-ready development kits developed in partnership with eight different embedded board vendors. Embedded Development Kits are now available from Emerson Network Power, Eurotech, and Kontron, with more kits due in the fourth quarter from Advantech, Adlink, Curtiss-Wright, GE Intelligent Platforms, and RadiSys, says Wind River.

Designed for DVR and other video-enabled applications, the Mano800 supports up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, and offers four RAID-enabled SATA ports, PCIe expansion, dual-display with DVI-D, plus USB, COM, and gigabit Ethernet I/O, says the company.

More Android tablets break cover

Navigation device manufacturer Rydeen Mobile Electronics announced a seven-inch, Android-based tablet called the “gPad GCOM701” at last weekend's IFA show in Berlin. Also at the show, Foryoudigital demonstrated its five-inch, Android-powered MX10, and Enspert announced that it built the “Identity Tab” Android tablet recently released by Korean carrier KT.

Android to duel Apple iTunes in music

Google's music service plans are crystallizing in talks with music labels on plans for a download store and a digital song locker to challenge Apple iTunes in the digital music market. Google is moving forward with plans to release an Android-based Google Music site by the end of the year to compete with iTunes, say reports.
