Two low-cost Android tablets take on U.K. market

Irish consumer electronics manufacture Disgo has begun selling a seven-inch, 1GHz Android 2.1 tablet, called the Disgo Tablet 6000, for 180 U.K. Pounds ($285). The release follows the announcement from British fashion retailer Next that it has begun selling a 10-inch, 1GHz ARM11-based “Next 10″ Tablet” running Android 2.1 for the same price — but an early review dubs it “dreadful.”

Virgin Mobile sells Android slider without contract

Virgin Mobile USA has started selling the Samsung Intercept Android slider at Target stores nationwide for $250 without a contract, available with a prepaid plan. The Samsung Intercept is equipped with a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, a 3.2-megapixel camera, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and an optical joystick, says the company.

T-Mobile MyTouch Android phone upgraded for 4G, HD video

T-Mobile announced an upgraded version of its HTC-manufactured MyTouch that is said to support the carrier's 4G-like HSPA+ network. The MyTouch is equipped with Qualcomm's new 1GHz, 4G-ready Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, and offers a 3.8-inch, WVGA screen as well as a five-megapixel camera with HD video recording, says T-Mobile.

GPS-equipped ARM processor hits the road

CSR plc announced an ARM11-based SoC (system on chip) for automotive use. The SiRFprimaAuto includes a GPS/Galileo navigation engine, hardware-accelerated 2D/4D graphics, “rich multimedia … and peripheral support,” plus SiRFDRive dead reckoning software, the company says.

Android phones push cameras to 14 megapixels

Japanese carrier KDDI announced a November release for a new 3.5-inch, Snapdragon-based “ISO3” Android 2.1 phone from Sharp, touted for its 960 x 640 display and 9.6-megapixel camera. Meanwhile, Altek offered more details on its previously tipped 3.2-inch “Leo” Android phone — including an unprecedented 14-megapixel camera — and said it will ship in Europe in the first quarter of 2011.

Microsoft’s Android lawsuit — payback for Mot’s WinMo defection?

Google responded to Microsoft's patent infringement lawsuit against Motorola over Android smartphones, saying the legal action “threatens innovation.” Meanwhile, analysts speculate on the timing and target of the lawsuit, with one analyst calling it payback against Motorola for abandoning Windows Mobile, and another suggesting the lawsuit is covering fire for Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 7 release.

Fanless panel PCs support 2.53GHz Core 2 Duos

Axiomtek announced a pair of panel PCs featuring resistive touchscreens and support for Core 2 Duo or Celeron M processors. The 17-inch IFO2175-850-FL and 22-inch IFO2225-851 each include IP65-rated front bezels and overall IPX1 ratings, 1.3 megapixel webcams, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, multiple serial ports, and fanless operation, the company says.

Transportation PCs include M12 connectors, expansion modules

Moxa rolled out three fanless, Intel Atom N270-based computers aimed at railway and vehicle applications. The V2406 includes Ethernet ports with M12-type connectors; the V2426 provides the same while adding proprietary expansion slots; and the V2422 offers the same slots while switching to standard RJ45 connectors, the company says.

Cortex-A8 modules get five megapixel cameras

E-con Systems announced a 5.0-megapixel autofocus camera module designed to interconnect with the Gumstix Overo computer-on-module (COM). Aimed at handheld imaging and video devices, the e-CAM50 OMAP Gstix module is based on Omnivision's OV5642 CMOS image sensor, and plugs into the Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP35x-based Overo, E-con says.

Google expands Android Market, launches phone gallery

Google has expanded Android Market paid application support for developers to 29 countries, and boosted to 32 the number of countries where consumers can buy apps for their phones. The search giant has also replaced its Nexus One web store with Google Phone Gallery, a site where users may compare three Android handsets at a time.
