Intel's “Ultrabook” format for portable computers is faltering, with pioneering vendor Asus failing to meet desired price points, and others choosing to wait it out, according to Taiwanese sources. DigiTimes reports claim that selling the devices for under $1,000 will be “practically infeasible.”

Portwell announced an all-in-one, Wi-Fi-enabled touchscreen computer for in-vehicle fleet applications. The PARD-S071TW is equipped with an aluminum, IP65-protected front panel, a resistive touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, and a 1GHz Celeron M ULV processor, says the company.

Dell launched its long awaited 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet — but only in China, with no date yet given for a U.S. appearance. The Dell Streak 10 Pro runs Android 3.1, offers the usual Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and other Honeycomb features, measures 0.51 inches (12.95mm) thick, and weighs 1.6 pounds, says the company.

Android represented a whopping 46.4 percent of global smartphone shipments in Q2 2011, with 34 percent of Android's total coming from Samsung, putting it a close second behind Apple, says ABI Research. The research firm also released a teardown analysis of the HTC Sensation and its highly integrated smartphone processor — the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260.

Nielsen released its U.S. smartphone subscriber numbers for June, showing Android inching up to 39 percent share ahead of Apple's iPhone with 28 percent. Meanwhile, some Android smartphone devices are being returned at a rate of 30 to 40 percent, claims an industry report.
